    3. Hardy Ramey Freeman 2004 Halifax Chronicle Herald Hardy Ramey Freeman, 92, humble Mayflower descendant and vegetable grower extraordinaire, died peacefully at home, Friday September 10, 2004. Born at Buckfield, Queens County, January 29, 1912, he was a son of the late Robie and Cora (Arenburg) Freeman. As a young boy, he left school to work in the lumber woods with his brothers and later settled on the family farm. He plowed the fields with his team of oxen and used them to haul pulpwood in the winters. As his proficiency in vegetable growing became known, he sold produce and was well-loved as the "vegetable man" on Penny Lane in Milton. After the farmhouse burned in 1963, Hardy and Lola moved to the nearby village of Greenfield where he continued to grow vegetables, but also drove the North Queens Rural High school bus. He was a former member of I.O.O.F. Lodge; an honourary member of the Greenfield Fire Department and a member of the Greenfield United Baptist Church. A tireless community supporter, he yearly donated the village Christmas tree. His love of the outdoors was matched by his enjoyment of bowling and playing cards. Hardy is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Lola (Crouse); daughter, Judi (Elliot)Hayes, Bedford; granddaughters, Stephanie (Mickey) MacDonald, Halifax; and Erin (Christopher) Pember, Winnipeg. He is also survived by his beloved great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Noelle Pember; and Christie Rose, John and Colin MacDonald; his sister, Mildred Wile; and brothers, George and Lincoln. He was predeceased by brothers, Everett, Banford, Charles, and Wilfred; half-sisters, Ada Eastwood and Margaret Morgan; half-brothers, Arthur, Ralph, Clarance, and Samuel. Arrangements are entrusted to Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service celebrating Hardy's life will be held Tuesday, September 14, at 3 p.m. in Greenfield United Baptist Church, Pastor Tom Davidson officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Queens County Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses; South Shore Palliative Care or Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department.
