Crossman Harley Young 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Saturday, January 22,2000. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Crossman Harley Young, MDCM,FRCP (C), FACP, FACC,FAGS, 80, prominent Dartmouth physician passed away at home on January 20, 2000, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born at Blandford, on January 28, 1919, he was a son of the late Borden and Florence (Meisner) Young. After graduating from Bridgewater High School, he went on to complete Dalhousie Medical School in 1941 as one of the youngest graduates in its history. Following a residency in Internal Medicine at the Kentville Sanatorium, he started a family practice as an early partner with Dr. Peter Hebb and Dr. Max Brennan at the Dartmouth Medical Centre. He left general practice in 1956 to specialize in Internal Medicine and obtained certification in 1959. He joined the faculty of medicine at Dalhousie as a general internist and teacher and served on the medical staff of the Halifax Infirmary, Camp Hill Hospital, and Dartmouth General. With a keen interest in the problems of medical care delivery, medical economics, and geriatric care, he served on the early councils of MD Management and Maritime Medical Care and was president MMC from 1963-65. In 1985, the Canadian Medical Association honoured him with a Life membership. Dr. Young will be remembered as a devoted consulant to family physicians and as a wise and compassionate teacher of clinical medicine. He served as past president of the Nova Scotia Society of Internal Medicine, Nova Scotia Cardiovascular Society and founding president of the Dartmouth Medical Society. He was a member of Kiwanis club for 45 years, serving as president of the Dartmouth Kiwanis Cub from 1984-85 and becoming a Mel Osborne Fellow. Aas a supporter of the Dartmouth Senior Citizens Service Centre, he received recognition for his outstanding contributions. He enjoyed hunting, salmon fishing, travel, and was a member of Brightwood Golf Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, E. Pauline (Gates) Young; sister, Lyla Nied, Halifax; brother, Glenn Young, Boston; daughters, Gail (Mrs. Richard Thompson), Toronto; Pamela (Mrs. Douglas Anderson), Halifax; and grandchildren, George and Richard Thompson, and Heather and Colleen Anderson. Visitation will be held in Mattatall's Funeral Home, Dartmouth, Sunday, January 23, from 1-4 p.m. A memorial service will be held in First Baptist Church, Portland Street, Dartmouth, on Saturday, January 29, at 3 p.m., Rev. Bud Hopper officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date in Blandford Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Division or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
