OBIT # 5216 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - February 1940: Pictou's first military funeral of the second Great War was held onTuesday for Sapper FRED MacDONALD, of the Royal Canadian Engineers, who died in a military hospital in Halifax last Saturday following an operation. The service , held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, was conducted by Capt.S.B. CAREY, chaplin of the Pictou Highlanders to which MacDonald belonged prior to his transfer to the Engineers. A firing party was provided by the Pictou Highlanders, and six NCO's of the battalion acted as pall bearers. The Lament was played by two members of the pipe band and Bugler STEWART sounded the Last Post and Reveille. Interment was in Laurel Hill cemetery. Deceased was the eldest son of Mr.and Mrs.HOWARD MacDONALD, of Pictou.
