    3. OBIT # 5278 - THE EVENING NEWS - FEBRUARY 27,1952 Pictou- The death of MRS.L.A. MacLEAN, wife of REV. LACHLAN A. McLEAN And one of Canada's most distinguished women painters, occured at the home ofher daughter, Mrs. R.G.E. WARK, Montreal, Feb.21, at the age of 78 years. The former SARAH JEAN MUNRO, she was a daughter of the late CAPTAIN and MRS. WILLIAM C. MUNRO of Pictou. She began studying voice at the Boston Conservatory, but midway through had a change of heart about her career and began the serious study of painting in Boston. She continued her studies at Liverpool, England and at Heatherly's School of Art in London, where she obtained her diploma. After her return from England she gave a command exhibition for the Marquis of Lorne, then Governor-General of Canada. The permanent Gallery of Ottawa purchased one of her recent works and a copy was made to be hung in the Court House in Montreal. She was a member of the Women's Art Society for many years and was organizer and first covener of the Studio Group. Greatly interested in young people's work in the church, she was the first chairman of the Girl's Work Board of the Religious Education Association. She held a number of executive offices with the Woman's Missionary Society, being President of the St.John, N.B. Presbyterial at one time. She was also on the United Church Presbyterial and Conference Branch executives in the Quebec and Montreal areas. A cousin, HON. E.M. MacDONALD was Minister of Militia and Defence during World War One. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, MRS. WARK; a grandson and granddaughter. The funeral was held from the Pictou United Church Sunday afternoon, Feb.24, with Rev.A.H. Moore officiating , assisted by Rev.A.T. MacDonald of Merigomish and Rev. Dr.L.H. MacLean, Pictou. Two hymns "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Dear Lord and Father Of Mankind", were sung. Interment was at Haliburton cemetery.
