Halifax Herald - Monday, 09 September 1946 - Page 1 - Snatch Block Hits Springhill Man In Number 4 Mine - Springhill, Sept. 8 - Struck by a snatch-block while supervising repair work in a shaft of No. 4 Mine on Saturday afternoon, William A. Cochrane, 49, of Springhill, died early this morning at All Saints Hospital without regaining consciousness. - Severe Injuries - He suffered a fractured skull, a broken jaw and shoulder and internal injuries. Few details of the accident were available here today. It was learned however, that the mine was not operating on Saturday afternoon and that Cochrane and a few workmen went down the shaft to do a little repair job. The snatch block, which is used to carry coal, suddenly broke loose when the pin fell out. Cochrane was unaware of this and was struck with terrific force on the head. He was rendered unconscious. First aid was rendered by fellow workmen and he was taken to the surface where a doctor was immediately summoned. When the extent of the victim's injuries were found to be critical he was ordered removed to the local hospital by ambulance. At the hospital it was stated that Cochrane had lost a considerable amount of blood. He was taken to the hospital unconscious and died at 1:30 a.m. today. - Heavy Force - Mine employees stated that the snatch block weighs approximately eight pounds and falling from a height, gathers considerable momentum so that it struck Cochrane with a terrific force. Cochrane was well known in this district, having lived here for some years. He was a highly respected citizen. He was a member or Eureka Lodge I.O.O.F., which he joined in 1934. He was a Past Grand Master of the lodge and took a keen interest in lodge activities. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Leslie and Roy Cochrane, who served overseas in World War II, his mother, who resides in Alma, N.B., and one brother, Medley Cochrane, of Parrsboro.
