    3. OBIT # 5336 - HALIFAX HERALD - 12 JAN 1993 SMITH, Fred J. - 75, Mabou, Inverness County, died January 11, 1993. Born in Lyons Brook, Pictou County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Edith (Johnson) Smith. After attending Pictou Academy, he joined the Royal Bank, where he worked for 42 years, retiring as district manager of administration, Eastern Region. During the Second World War, he served his country as a pilot with the R.C.A.F., flying Liberators with the Coastal Command in India, Burma and Ceylon. He was accomplished in various roles, such as financial organizer, farmer, beekeeper, diver, mechanic, fireman and sailor. Serving his community, he was a former member, elder and board of managers member of Bethany United Church, Halifax; member of Mabou-Hillborough United Church; MacKay Lodge, No. 113, Sydney; 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite, Halifax and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 132. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean MacMillan; three sons, Ray, Montreal; Gerald, Halifax; David, Toronto; two grandsons; brother, Roland A. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond. The body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mabou Hillborough United Church.
