M. Shirley Gates 1990 Halifax Chronicle Herald Handwritten date: January 20, 1990. M. Shirley Gates, 72, New Ross, died Saturday in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born at East Dalhousie, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Florence (Rhodenizer) Wright. She was a member of New Ross Baptist Church. She was a member of the church choir and taught Sunday School for a number of years. She was church clerk for several years. She was active in Marjorie DeLong Baptist Auxiliary and was dominion life member of the WMS. She was secretary-treasurer of New Ross Farmers Association for 25 years. She was a member of the local Home and School Association and Farm Forum Association. She is survived by her husband, John; a daughter, Judith (Mrs. Daniel Melvin), New Ross; three sons, Meredith, North Alton; Merlin, New Ross; Murray, Mahone Bay; a sister, Allison Lutz, Lake Paul; two brothers, Lorimer, Coldbrook; Donald, East Dalhousie; five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Vivian. The body is at H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, New Ross, visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in New Ross Baptist Church, Pastor David Hine officiating. Burial will be in New Ross Baptist Cemetery.
