OBIT # 5508 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 15 JANUARY 1942 HUGH D. CUMMING - TEULON, MAN - There passed away at his home in Teulon, Manitoba, on January 5th, HUGH DUNCAN CUMMING, for many years an Inspector of Schools for the Province of Manitoba. Mr. Cumming was a man of tireless energy, sterling integrity and unusual native ability. He was singularly gifted as a teacher and had made significant contributions to the school system and educational policies of the province. From his boyhood he was deeply interested in nature study and was in large measure responsible for the advanced methods of teaching this subject which the Manitoba Department of Education has developed. He was born at Cummings' Mountain, Pictou County, N.S., on April 7th, 1879, the fourth son of WILLIAM and AGNES(MacMillan) CUMMING. Educated in the ideal school(Sunny Brae) and at Pictou Academy, he first taught school at Sunny Brae for two years and in 1904 removed to Manitoba where he was at first a district school teacher, then principal of the Teulon High School, superintendent of an industrial school at Portage la Prairie, and finally, as already noted, an Inspector of Schools. He was married on July 1st, 1909, to Miss OLIVE LYLE ARCHIBALD, whom old residents of Sunny Brae will remember as the daughter of Rev.WILLIAM ARCHIBALD, minister in Sunny Brae from 1895 to 1904. They had seven children, six of whom survive, WILLIAM, in the Entomological Branch of the department of Argriculture at Winnipeg; JOHN, in the lumber buisness at Teulon; HANA HELEN, a school teacher; AGNES, a graduate nurse; JEAN, a senior student at the University of Manitoba; and LOIS, a high school student. Mrs. Cumming predeceased her husband seven years ago.
