UNKNOWN PAPER - 25 FEBRUARY 1957 J. DOUGLAS OLIVER - The passing at the Tatamagouche Red Cross Hospital on Monday, February 18, of James Douglas OLIVER removed from Oliver, the community where he was born and in which he lived his entire life, excepting for short visits to U.S.A. and Albert, a highly respected and beloved citizen. Until his retirement three years ago, due to a severe illness, he carried on with success and skill the business of farming and mill operator. He always took a great interest in all that concerned the community. Mr. Oliver always found keen enjoyment in the fellowship of his friends and neighbors. He was a member and elder of West New Annan United Church. A valued member of I.O.O.F. He was 53 years of age. During his three sick years, he was tenderly cared for by his wife, Bessie. Through the many days of suffering he remained patient, cheerful and interested in all the work of his family and friends. With the exception of the times when he was in the V.G. Hospital, Halifax, and Tatamagouche Red Cross Hospital, there were very few days that his wife didn't take him for a car ride. The week before he died, his brother David Oliver, Blairmore, Alberta, flew home to spend a week with him. Douglas always found time to give counsel and a friendly word of encouragement to everyone. This was evident on the day of his funeral when there wasn't seating capacity for his friends that gathered at West New Annan United Church. He leaves to mourn their loss, his widow, the former Bessie MUNRO, Tatamagouche, three brothers, William, of Cowley, Alberta, who flew home to attend the funeral, David W. and Roach, both of Blairmore, Alberta, and five sisters, Bessie, at home; Mary, (Mrs. Wm. CARRUTHERS), Oliver; Gertie, Blairmore; Nettie, (Mrs. Chas. SWAN), Debert; Bertha (Mrs. Leonard GILES), Wentworth; and nine nephews and 14 nieces. A short service was held at his home on February 21 at 1.30 p.m., conducted by Rev. G. DECKER. A hymn, "Abide With Me", was sung. The cortege then moved to West New Annan United Church. Rev. G. DECKER read Psalm 116 and gave a message. Music was in charge of Mrs. Harold MATHESON. Hymns sung were: "The Lord Is My Shepherd", "The Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "Meet Me There." Pallbearers were members of the I.O.O.F. Bruce TUCKER, Aubrey RUSHTON, Elmon BELL, Sidney BONNYMAN, John MacKAY and Carl BELL. The floral tributes were beautiful. Interment was in Bell Gift Cemetery. Harry BONNYMAN, Tatamagouche, was funeral director. The members of I.O.O.F. held a short service at the grave, conducted by Henry COLE, Jim McPHERSON, and Joe STEVENSON.
