Colin William Sarty 1959 Bridgewater Bulletin A gloom was cast over the community of Upper Branch on Monday morning, February 16th., when the tolling of the church bell announced the death of Colin William Sarty at the D.M. Hospital at the age of eighty-three years and five months. The late Mr. Sarty was born at New Canada, the son of the late Stephen and Lucy Sarty and came here when yet a young man to live with his uncle, Elias Crouse. He was a life long member of the Baptist Church, superintendent of the Union Sunday School here ever since it was organized more than thirty years ago and among the floral tributes was a beautiful bouquet from the Sunday School. He also was the caretaker of the church ever since it was built in 1922 and regardless of denomination, he was always ready and willing to serve in any way possible and his passing leaves an empty place in the church life of the community which will never be filled. Funeral services on Wednesday afternoon were conducted by student pastor, Dean Annis, who preached a short but comforting sermon from John 11- 25-26, to a capacity filled house. The pall bearers were Merle Wagner, Wallace Bolivar, Brunswick Rodenhiser, Dennis Beck, Ernest Beck, and Clarence Wentzell. He leaves to mourn an only son, Leslie, at home; an aged sister, Mrs. Sarah Hall of Worcester, Mass.; a niece, Mrs. Harris Cook of New Canada; and nephew, Earl of Middleton. His wife, the former Mary Silver, predeceased him in 1933; a son, Floyd in 1968, and another son died in infancy.
