Rev. Philip DeLong 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Wedneday, February 23, 2000. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Rev. Philip DeLong, 90, New Minas, died Monday, February 21, 2000, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born at Union Square, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Maynard and Sadie (Cox) DeLong. He was ordained into the United Baptist Ministry in 1935 and served a total of 39 years as a caring, dedicated pastor in the pastorates of Tancook; Grand Myra, Cape Breton; Coldstream, New Brunswick; Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick; Barrington, Waterville, New Ross, Seabright, and Tryon, Prince Edward Island. He retired in 1974 due to ill health. Dedicated to the ministry, he served in part-time ministry another 12 years as minister of visitation in Bayers Road United Baptist Church and part-time chaplain in Halifax Hospitals. He was actively involved in mission work even in retirement. In 1991 Philip and his wife, Marjorie, were instrumental in organizing the first United Baptist Missionary Group for both men and women of all ages, which is now called "The Marjorie DeLong Family Missionary Society" of the Seabright United Baptist Pastorate. He is survived by daughters, Rosalie (Mrs. Kevin Brady), Somerset, New Jersey; Dianne (Mrs. Rev. Gerald Zinck), Centreville; son, Alan DeLong and wife Pauline, Dartmouth; sister, Annetta Neaves, Halifax; brothers, Rev. Gordon DeLong, Port Williams; Rev. Deacon Herbert DeLong, Shubenacadie; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marjorie Lillian Doleman and sister, Alberta. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today in W.C. Hiltz Funeral Parlour, Kentville. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, February 24, in the Centreville United Baptist Church, Reverends Gerald Zinck, Jonathan Zinck, and Martin Zwicker officiating. Burial will be in the East Dover Baptist Cemetery, Halifax County. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Centreville United Baptist Church or the Campus Crusade for Christ.
