UNKNOWN PAPER - 2 March 1951 ARTHUR SMITH - Postman Finds Man Dead, Sitting in Chair - Arthur SMITH, who lived alone in his home on Florida Road, was discovered dead Thursday, 28 February, when the postman in the district investigated after Mr. SMITH failed to collect his mail, delivered the previous two days. Percy PATRIQUIN, delivering the mail on R.R.1 Wentworth, with Kelley LETCHER, car driver, on Wednesday had a pension cheque for Mr. SMITH. He failed to meet the mail man. On Thursday when he again failed to appear, the mailman asked his driver to take the cheque into the house, Mr. Fletcher found the door locked, but saw the elderly gentleman sitting in his rocking chair. Neighbors were notified and the police called. Later in the day an investigation was held. Those present were Dr. Dan MURRAY, Constable J.L. LEWIS, Barrister William NEILSON, Tatamagouche; Edward Smith, Malagash, brother of the deceased; Kelly LETCHER, and Mr. SMITH's nearest neighbors. It was decided at this inquiry that an inquest was not necessary. The deceased was last seen by a neighbor, Russell FLANAGAN, on last Sunday, sawing wood outside his home. Neighbors cannot recall seeing any light or smoke from the house since that time, and groceries purchased on the previous Friday were still unopened. Deceased was in his 86th year and was born in Wentworth, Cumberland County, and was a veteran of World War One. He settled in New Annan about four years ago. He is survived by one son Joseph in the United States; one sister, Maude ARLINGTON, Mass.; three brothers, Edward, Malagash; Martin, Ontario; and Sidney, Kemptown. The funeral will be held in West New Annan United Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Gerald BRUCE of Tatamagouche officiating. Interment will be in Bell Gift cemetery, West New Annan.
