OBIT # 8039 - UNKNOWN PAPER - 1960 Truro- One of the province's best known sportsmen and a resident of Truro for the past few years, Harry G. Saunders, 77, died here Tuesday morning. Mr. Saunders, who resided most of his life in Stellarton, although in failing health for the past five years, was confined to his bed for only the last five weeks. A son of the late John Saunders, Harry Saunders was born in Lille, France, where his parents were residing temporarily where his father, a machinist by trade, was installing machinery in a lace factory. At an early age the Saunders family moved to Andover, Mass., where Harry attended school. While at school he became a talented cricket player, touring many parts of the New England States with outstanding teams. It was as a cricket player that Harry first came to Nova Scotia. When 20 years of age, he came to Westville where he played for a year with the Westville Cricket Club. He returned to his home at the end of the season, with a strong desire to come back. He returned in a few years' time with a touring American professional baseball team. He remained in Westville, and his prowess as a baseball player is still remembered by older Pictou County residents, as well as admirers in other parts of this province. He was long associated with Westville and Stellarton teams, playing various positions in the infield and also taking a turn on the mound. Brother, Jim, now living in Maine, later joined the team, and was an outstanding pitcher in that old Nova Scotia league. Although Harry played baseball, tennis, football, and for many years was an ardent curler, he is best remembered for his skill as a cricketer. A curler for over 50 years, Harry himself liked to recall his feats in the game. He was particularly proud of never missing a Johnson Cup provincial play until health forced him to the sidelines a few years ago. He liked to recall skipping his Stellarton rink to a 12 to 10 victory over Prof. Murray MacNeil in Johnson Cup play at Halifax in 1932. Until his retirement some 12 years ago, Harry was employed in the car department of the C.N.R., Stellarton. He was also employed for some 25 years with the Halifax Herald Limited, reporting general news from Stellarton and sport from all Pictou county centres. Harry was also active in fraternal circles in Pictou County. He was a member of Keith Lodge, AF and AM, Stellarton, receiving his 50 year jewel some four years ago. He was also a member of Fuller Lodge, IOOF, and was recently made a life member of that organization. He is survived by his wife, formerly Elizabeth MacKay, Stellarton, and one daughter, Jean (Mrs. George MacLean), Truro; and two grandsons, George and Sandy. One brother and sister also survive in the United States. Funeral service will be held from the Christie Funeral Home on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The service will be conducted by Dr.J. A. Koffend, minister of St. James Presbyterian Church and Dr. T. E. MacLennan, minister of St. Andrew's United Church. Burial will be in Stellarton.
