    3. OBIT # 8051 - EVENING NEWS - 28 JUNE 1971 New Glasgow- Typesetter and sports writer, John Dwyer Smith, died at his home, 141 MacIntosh Street, Sunday morning after a two month's illness. Known as "Tiger Jack" from his youthful days in sport, he was 64. A native of Dartmouth, he was a son of Sydney and Mary Dwyer Smith and spent all his days from boyhood in New Glasgow. He joined the staff of The Evening News 47 years ago, contributing to the sports page and the editorial page. He was uniquely able to write his stories and comments directly on the linotype. During the war years he collaborated with the late W.T. Hayden, K.C., in turning out a weekly digest of local news which was prepared so it could be clipped and sent to men in the services overseas and across Canada. Thousands were mailed out and gratefully received by men hungry for word of what was going on at home. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Hall, and two children by a previous marriage, Gordon and Ruth(Mrs. Eldridge Livingstone), seven grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Patterson in Halifax. The body is at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home where the funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Lorne Street Cemetery.
