Gunner Carroll St.Clair Conrad 1944 Bridgewater Bulletin New Canada- The tragedy of warfare was deeply felt by relatives and friends when it was learned that Gunner Carroll St.Clair Conrad was killed in action in Italy on September 14. He was 27 years of age, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Conrad. He is survived by his parents, his wife, Florence Elizabeth; two small daughters, Elixabeth, 3 years old and Carolyn, 7 months old; three brothers, at home and sister, Vera (Mrs. LeRoy Cook), Lower Branch. He enlisted May 28, 1941 and took his training at McNab's Island, Halifax, on the Searchlight Battery. He arrived overseas September 14, 1943 and fought in the battles at North Africa and Italy. An impressive memorial service was held in the Baptist Church on Sunday, October 15, conducted by Lic. L.T. Seamone, who spoke comforting words from the text," Being dead, yet he speaketh." Many people attended the service to pay their last respects to a brave soldier, who made the supreme sacrifice. In letters of sympathy received by Mrs. Conrad from Carroll's Lieutenant-Colonel and Major, they spoke highly of his excellent courage. Quoting words of the Major:" I can speak with knowledge of his soldierly courage and integrity and I shall miss him as one with whom I was proud to serve." On September 15, a burial service was held and Carroll and his comrades were buried side by side.
