Roderick MacDonald Black 2002 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Tuesday, November 26, 2002. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Roderick MacDonald Black, Q.C., "Rod", 82, Chester, died November 25, 2002, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Amherst, he was the only child of the late Honourable Percy C. and Jean M. (MacDonald) Black. Rod received his early education in Amherst and Bishop College School, Lennoxville, Quebec. He served overseas during the Second World War from 1942-1945 with the Royal Canadian Air Force; graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1949 and practiced in Halifax. He was appointed to the Board of Hospitalization in the late 1950's; was chairman of the Board of Medicare; chairman of the Board of Victoria General Hospital 1981-1983 and he was Chief Commissioner of the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission. Rod was a very active member of the Provincial and Federal Progressive Conservative Party and a former member of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Board of Directors at Shoreham Village Home for Special Care, Chester. Rod is survived by daughter, Wendy, Chester. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Sara "Ted" Cann; daughter, Beverley. No visitation by request. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, November 29, in Davis Funeral Home, Chester, Father Jim McCorriston officiating. Burial in Pinehill Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
