OBIT # 9471 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 30 January 1917 Mr. George Wood, so well known to almost everyone between New Glasgow and Sherbrooke, passed away suddenly of heart trouble on Friday morning at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Rogers, of Pleasant St., New Glasgow. The late gentleman was born in Scotland and married there. Soon after his marriage he came to this country with his bride on a sailing vessel to Quebec. There they shipped on another vessel to this county and landed at the loading ground, thence they walked to New Glasgow. >From here they went to a cousin's place at Bridgeville and thence to their future home at the Garden of Eden Lake, where they remained until the death of Mrs. Wood. Soon after Mr. Wood came to New Glasgow to live with his granddaughter, Mrs. Rogers, as stated above. Mr. Wood was a fine man, a consistent and devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, being of the communion of United congregation since coming to New Glasgow. He was 88 years of age and a remarkably well preserved man for his years, hearty . good humoured and a pleasure to talk to as he was very well informed. For many years the Editor of this paper was acquainted with Mr. Wood and always found him a high toned and upright man, and such was he found by all who knew him. In politics he was, as many a Scot is, a Liberal; but his Liberalism, so equitable and kindly his nature, found his friends Conservatives as well as Liberals. The men of the old school to which Mr. Wood belonged are passing away, leaving the world the poorer for their passing. The sons and daughters of Mr. Wood are Duncan, at Eden Lake, John in Alberta, Mrs. Wm. Sinnis, Fox Brook, and Mrs. Helen Henry, Wakefield, Mass. Besides there are twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren living. The eldest being Mrs. Earl Rogers, New Glasgow. Of his descendants two are on the firing line in France, George Sinnis, of Fox Brook, and James Wood, of Edmonton. A sister of Mrs. Wood survives him, Mrs. Ellen Williamson, of Hancock, New Hampshire. The late Mr. Wood was born in Arbroth, Scotland, on October 1st, 1829, and married in July 1850, coming to Nova Scotia eighteen months later.
