George Neville Barnhill 2006 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Friday, December 8, 2006. >From the collection of Gwen Christie George Neville Barnhill, 87, Mersey Point, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 6, 2006, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Fort Lawrence, he was the son of the late William and Georgina (Chapman) Barnhill. George served in the Canadian Army Service Corps from 1939-1946, serving overseas for six years as a Warrant Officer II and also in charge of movement and control of troops in the United Kingdom during the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, and through to the end of the war. He had the duty of bringing 365 Canadian War Brides and their children to Pier 21, Halifax, and was the only Canadian soldier on board, at the end of the Second World War in 1946. On discharge, he entered the motion picture business in London, England before coming back to Canada in 1959 and going to work for the National Film Board of Canada, where he worked in all aspects of the film business, before retiring in 1983 and coming to Queens County. He was a 3rd degree Mason of Canada Lodge No. 3527, London, England, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 38, Liverpool and also a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Liverpool. He is survived by his wife, Greta; stepdaughter, Lisa Parnell (Keith Nickerson), East Port Medway; stepson, Brian (Sharon) Parnell, East Port Medway; son-in-law, Dale McKnight, Calgary; grandchildren, Kristen, Cindy, Michael, Steven, Robert, and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by daughter, Gillian McKnight. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, December 9, at 2 p.m., in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Liverpool, Rev. Arthur Nash officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Queens General Hospital Foundation or a charity of choice.
