Bruce Avard Mader 2008 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Bruce Avard Mader, 82, died peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on Thursday, March 6, 2008, following a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Mahone Bay on August 16, 1925, to George P. and Gladys (Westhaver) Mader. He served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his navy service he worked in the real estate industry in Dartmouth. He is survived by son, Dennis Mader and his wife, Karen and their children, Rob, Michelle, Michael, and Marianne, Dartmouth; daughters, Betty Ann and her son, Devon, Dartmouth; Colleen and her husband Chris Rogers and their daughter, Laura, Ottawa. He is also survived by brother, Carl, Silverlake, Ohio and sister, Helen, Halifax. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Mildred (Sutherland) Mader; sisters, Molly, Marge, Milly, Jean, and his brother, Arthur "Buddy." His children remember his lively personality and many hobbies over the years, including clothes-making, watch-making, and spending time at his beloved Spondo retreat. He was an avid sports fan and never missed a Blue Jays game. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 9, from 7-9 p.m. A private family burial will take place on Monday, March 10. All friends and family members are welcome to attend an open house which will take place from 3-6 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the home of Dennis and Karen Mader, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bruce Mader may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Palliative Care Unit in care of the Dartmouth General Hospital.
