Verna May Smith 2008 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Verna May Smith, Halifax, formerly of Crowell's, Shelburne County, passed away May 15, 2008, in Cheltenham, England. Born December 13, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Caleb and Vera (Hartman)) Sperry of West Dublin. Verna taught elementary school in Barrington for many years. She also was active in the adult literacy program and numerous volunteer groups. Her many interests included gardening and travel. Her passion was the game of bridge. Verna was a member of the Cape Sable Historical Society, the Green Hill Seniors Club in Port LaTour and Spencer House in Halifax. Verna will be fondly missed by son, John Smith, Oak Park; daughters, Marsha (George) Goodwin, Clark's Harbour; Ruth Hatfield, Crowell's; Elizabeth (Ron) Phillipchuk, Halifax; grandchildren, Tammy Atwood, Doctor's Cove; David (Andrea Nickerson) Smith, Barrington; Julie (Forman Jr.) Crowell, Crowell's; great-grandchildren, Justin, Mandy, Katie, Daniel; nieces, Mary Ann Sperry (Ron Champaign), Gail (Dave) Heffernan, Barbara Leonard (Glen Hatfield), Susan Brown, Dianne Kuntz; nephews, Allan and Martin Teeter, Donald Smith, and extended family. Verna is also survived by sisters, Leona Teeter, Guelph; Evelyn Brown, Wileville; brother-in-law, Glendon Smith, Dallas. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Everett H. Smith; and niece, Shirley Anne Weagle. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, in H. Huskilson's Memorial Chapel, Barrington, Rev. Perry Ingersoll officiating. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to Spencer House, Halifax, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
