Mrs. Alvin Gates 1936 Bridgewater Bulletin In the sudden death of Mrs. Alvin Gates, which occurred at her home in Stanburne, early Thursday morning, May 13th, the entire community was shocked and have sustained a great loss. The deceased was before her marriage Miss Melissa Gates, daughter of the late Elias and Lydia Varner and was born at New Germany 72 years ago. She was of a loving and bright disposition, endearing herself to all who knew her, and will be greatly missed in the home circle and community. Her friends will recall many happy days spent at her home where she gave everyone a hearty welcome. She was a life-long and faithful member of the Anglican Church. Surviving are the sorrowing husband and one son, Sumner, who with his wife and two children, Harold and Minnie, reside at home; six brothers, Obed, Charles, Joshua, New Germany; Kenneth and Henry, Stanburne; Uriah, Dorchester, Massachusetts; and one sister, Millie (Mrs. Stuart), Milton, Massachusetts. The funeral services on Saturday afternoon were conducted at the home and grave by Rev. G. Ott and were largely attended. The floral tributes were beautiful, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The bereaved family has the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
