Blaine Newman 2008 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Blaine "Alfie" Newman, Bridgewater, on May 17, 2008, at the age of 61, went gently into the night, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband, father, and son of wife, Wanda (Kushner), son, Jake, and mother, Peggy. Born in Sydney on November 30, 1946, he grew up in Halifax and graduated from St. Patrick's High School and Dalhousie University (B. Sc.) He resided in Bridgewater for over 35 years and was most recently the owner/operator of Mac's Mini Mart. He loved life and liked nothing better than to canoe on a quiet lake at dusk. He enjoyed listening to the blues, cabinet-making, travel, fine foods, good scotch, his home, and his family and friends. He was a wise man, with a wry sense of humour and always wore a smile. For many years he was an active member of the Bridgewater Kinsmen Club and until recently, sat on the board of directors of the LaHave River Credit Union. He was predeceased by his father, Ralph Newman. In addition to his wife, son, and mother, he is survived by his brother, Patrick (Carol); sister-in-law, Susanna (Jim); brothers-in-law, Frank and Mike; mother and father-in-law, Helen and Frank Kushner and numerous nieces and nephews. As per Alfie's wishes, his body has been cremated and there will be no visitation. Memorial service will be held today at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Bridgewater, Father Louis Cassie officiating. Short reception to follow in the Bridgewater Kinsmen Hall. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the South Shore Public Library, South Shore Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit or a charity of choice.
