She was an avid bowler in her younger years and she took pride in her roses. Surviving are daughters, Jean Elizabeth (Mrs. Ivan Doucette), Yarmouth; Elaine (George) Rogers, Prince George, British Columbia; brothers, Henry, George, Victor, and William, all of Yarmouth; sisters, Katherine (Mrs. Enos Surette), Florence (Mrs. Edmund Harris), Rosalie (Mrs. Robert Stanley), all of Yarmouth; grandchildren, Heather Doucette, Randy Doucette, Patti Blokland, Cheryl Rogers, Jennifer Kitsul; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Justin, Megan, Emilie, Kelsey, Leah, Alex, Hailey, and Noah. She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis; two infant sons; granddaughter, Shelley; grandson, Randall; brothers, Willard and Albert. Born in Dartmouth, she was the former Bertha Lucy NELSON, a daughter of the late Christian and Agnes (WRIGHT) NELSON. She was a resident of Bible Hill for the past 39 years. She is survived by two daughters, Ethel (Mrs. Archie MacKAY), Dawson Creek, B.C.; Evangeline (Mrs. Malcolm HIGGINS), Valley; three sons, Hirham, Percy and Albert, Valley; two sisters, Mrs. Mary PATTERSON, Victoria, B.C.; Effie (Mrs. Roland ROY), Bible Hill; one brother, Douglas, North River; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by husband William; an infant son, Sidney; three sisters; four brothers; and four step-children. OBIT # 9478 - UNKNOWN PAPER - 19 August 1948 Truro, August 19 - Nova Scotia today widely mourns the loss of one of its better known medical practitioners, Matthew George Burris , M.D. , C.M., whose death occurred suddenly yesterday evening at Dartmouth as a result of a heart attack. Greatly respected by the citizens of the town of Dartmouth where he had practiced his profession for 36 years, Dr. Burris was 61 years of age. He had been very active in promoting the Dartmouth Memorial Hospital Fund of which he was one of the originators. His death came as a great shock to his family, friends and associates, as he had just rallied after a period of two weeks during which he had been seriously ill. He had been actively engaged in his medical practice up until the time of his illness. Born at Upper Musquodoboit , February 28, 1887, he attended Truro Academy , continuing his studies at Dalhousie University where he obtained his B.A. degree in 1907. He graduated in medicine from Dalhousie in 1911. Upon graduation he practiced for a short time at Kamloops, BC, returning east in 1912 to establish his practice in Dartmouth. He was on the staff of the Victoria General Hospital and the staff of Dalhousie University for a time, and was a staff physician at the Halifax Infirmary at the time of his death. A valued member of the congregation of St. James United Church, Dr. Burris had an intense interest in town affairs, was a charter member of the Dartmouth Memorial Hospital Fund, and had served on its board of directors since the fund's inception. Keenly interested in sports, he was a member of the Brightwood Golf Club. During his college days he was a star member and team captain of the glorious Dalhousie senior rugby team of 1909 which was one of the greatest teams in the history of the University. A member of the Nova Scotia Historical Society, he travelled extensively in the province taking a keen interest in its history, writing many short stories based on Nova Scotia lore. He was a former president of the Halifax Medical Society, a member of the Nova Scotia Medical Society and the Canadian Medical Society. He is survived by his wife , the former Fay Rutherford; one daughter Margaret of Dartmouth, two brothers Adam of Upper Musquodoboit and Frank of Truro; four sisters Miss Grace D. Burris, Upper Musquodoboit, Mrs Hugh Campbell, Middle Stewiacke, Mrs William Coburn, Mouth of Keswick, York County, N.B. and Mrs Adam Dean, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

The service was conducted by Rev. Calder Fraser. The hymns sung were "Abide With Me" , "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Sun of My Soul". The pallbearers were Frank, Sidney and Roland Cox, Harry O'Connell , Archie Bentley and Allen MacKenzie. Mrs Smith was 82 years of age, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Hugh Graham Cox of Otter Brook. She is survived by a daughter Bessie (Mrs. Lloyd Anthony), Upper Stewiacke; three sons Hugh in Milford, Fred in Truro, and Rod at home; five grandchildren, a sister, Mrs Edson Cox and a brother Grant Cox, Otter Brook. Her husband predeceased her several years ago. Interment was in Upper Stewiacke cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia (Crouse); daughter, Shawna, Calgary; sisters, Ruby (Doug) MacKay, Truro; Juanita (Carl) Bezanson, Port Williams; Elizabeth "Betti" (Doug) Gallupe, Dartmouth; nieces and nephews. Evelyn was a faithful member of Trinity United Church, Rose Bay where in her earlier years she taught Sunday School and was part of the U.C.W. She was also a member of the Riverview Rebekah Lodge No. 56, Riverport. Evelyn shared the gift of love genuinely and graciously with all who knew her. Her warm smile, kind heart, and pleasant manner made her a joy to be around. Her home was a welcoming place to visit. Evelyn loved being a mother and grandmother and found deep fulfillment in her dedication to her family. Evelyn is survived by Max, loving and faithful husband for over 55 years; sons, Arnold (Liz), Lower Rose Bay; Peter (Colleen), Lunenburg; sister, Barbara (James) Young, Scarborough; grandchildren, Ryan (Erika), Scott (Rebecca), Kate, and Jenna. OBIT # 9472 - THE NEW GLASGOW EVENING NEWS - MAY 1949 The death occurred of Mrs. Sarah Jane (Rogers) MacKay at 2 a.m. April 29th 1949 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Merritt MacKay, 528 MacDonald St., New Glasgow, N.S. She was born in Eden Lake, Pictou County, March 24th 1872. She was the eldest daughter of Alexander henry of Alma, Pictou County and Ellen (Wood) Henry of Eden Lake. Her mother came over from Arbroath, Scotland when 1 year old with her parents who settled at Eden Lake. Her childhood days were spent in Thorburn, where her parents made home. Her father, Alexander Henry drove for Mr. Greinor, the manager of the Mines in Thorburn at the time. Her father died when she was 12 years old. Her brother, the late George Henry was well known in Thorburn. When a young girl in her early teens, she went to Wakefield, Mass to reside, her family joining her as the years went by. First her sister Isabel Greinor Henry, next her sister Jessie, and her mother and brother George. She married Al Rogers in Wakefield, Mass where they made their home for the first few years, later coming to New Glasgow to live. *Note: Remainder of this obit missing.

She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church and had various postings in Canada and Germany. She was involved in the army chapel activities and the Girl Guides of Canada. She was a charter member of the ladies auxiliary Cobequid Branch Canadian Legion. Surviving besides her mother, are her husband, Lt. Col. She came to live in Halifax in her early 20's. She was employed by Eaton's for 22 years and was an active member of West End Baptist Church and was active in community activities. She was well-known for her pleasant smile and personality. A devoted mother and grandmother, she will be sadly missed by all her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Cyril; daughter, Nancy (Tom) Perry, Summerside; sons, Wayne (Carol) Giffin, Summerside; Larry (Pam), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Tara Lynn, Craig, Melissa, Todd, Jillian, Sarah.
