Owen Fenwick Ritcey 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Owen Fenwick Ritcey, 79, Bayport, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Riverport, he was a son of the late Fred Henry and Leone (Conrad) Ritcey. Owen was a faithful member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Rose Bay, who enjoyed music and sang in the church choir and in Zion Lutheran Church Male Choir, Lunenburg. He worked as a representative for Fuller Brush Products for many years. He belonged to the Happy Wanderers along with his wife, Bertha, and had many friends with his musical talents. His wife, Bertha, passed away on March 30, 2007, quite suddenly. They will both be missed by their many friends and family. He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Ivan) Brown, North River; Debbie (Tim) Dartt, Truro; stepchildren, Jeanette (Chester) Shand, Shag Harbour; Rhoda (Wayne) Kelly, North West Harbour; Danny (Patty) Flemming, Upper Port Latour; Ralph(Brenda) Flemming, Cape Sable Island; sisters, Verna Myra, Lunenburg; Jean Clarke, First South; Grace Weiss, Riverport; nine stepgrandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. Besides his wife, Bertha, he was predeceased by brother,Gordon Ritcey amd an infant brother and sister. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. Born in Bridgewater, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Lettie (Conrad) Barnes. Effie loved her flower garden and doing embroidery. She was an avid country music fan and loved dancing. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine (Kim) Risser, Bridgewater; Sharon Dagley, Liverpool; Valerie (Tony) Roy, Mersey Point; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Oickle, Bridgewater; Mildred Snyder, Lower Chelsea. She was predeceased by husband, Emerson; son, Robert; brothers, Arthur and Albert. Louis John Wentzell 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Louis John Wentzell - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis John Wentzell, 74, Feltzen South, on February 25, 2007, in Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Born in Feltzen South, he was the eldest son of the late Austin and Mabel (Myra) (Corkum) Wentzell. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Louis began his career with Imperial Oil on the M/V Esso Knoxville at the age of 19. He later went to work for the Lunenburg Foundry where he spent 25 years as a diesel mechanic. In 1980, Louis retired his mechanical career to pursue his passion for the sea as a lobster fisherman, until a stroke in 2000 prevented him from continuing. In his leisure time, Louis enjoyed gardening, doing crosswords, working in the woods, hunting, reading, and being with his family. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Madelyn Zinck; daughters, Kathryn Myalls, Rose Bay; Karen Wentzell, Berwick; son, Tim (Nancy), Feltzen South; grandchildren, Mikaela and Dylan Myalls, William and Laura Hoskins, and Emily Wentzell. He was predeceased by brother, Roy and stepfather, Emerson Corkum. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by family request. Douglas was a deep sea fisherman all of his life, starting at the age of nine and working until his retirement at the age of 69. He was also a member of Wesley United Church, Feltzen South. Douglas is survived by his wife, the former Rhea Winters, Lunenburg; son, Rex (Pam) Spindler, Middle Cornwall; sister, Shirley Wilneff, Big Lots. Born in Harwich, Masssachusetts, he was a son of the late Frank Alfred and Lura Hazel (Hall) Pierce. He has a record of 12 years serving in the Armed Services, including activities with the Navy during the Second World War when he was a Chief Petty Officer, identified as CC STD in the Supply Corps and also receiving his Nicaraguan campaign medals. He was a member of S.L. Nickerson Legion Post and a mason receiving his 50 year jewel. He worked in the police services in Middleboro, retiring as sergeant after 20 years. He and his wife moved to Port Medway in 1972. He is survived by his daughter, Janice (Merrill) Smith, Port Medway; grandchildren, Kimberly Smith-Crouse, Crystal Wentzell, Tammy Whynott; six great-grandchildren; brother, Charles, Taunton, Maassachusetts. He was predeceased by his wife, Verna E. (Howes) Pierce; brothers, Edward and Alfred. Funeral service was held Monday, August 4, in Ashley Funeral Home, Middleboro. Born and raised in New Ross he was a son of the late Reginald and Leta Leopold (Veinot). Granville worked for over 45 years as a land surveyor, retiring in 2004 as a senior partner at SDMM and was recognized by the devoted staff for his outstanding dedication and service. His many years of work included among other challenging projects, surveying Sable Island's sand dunes, Nova Scotia's natural gas pipeline, and after retiring from surveying, he carried on as the owner of the Comfort Inn in Halifax where he had a great love for the staff. An avid gardener,Granville took joy in his garden, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and family. A loving, caring husband and father , he is survived by the love of his life, Pauline; daughter, Charlotte (Vaughn) Porter, Moncton; son, Derek (Tanya), Vancouver; daughter, Angela (Bradley) Browne, Waverley; and his brothers, Hardy, Fayne, Randy, New Ross; sister, Holly (Phil) Meister, Schreiber, Ontario. His grandchildren, Alec, Morgan, Noah, Courtney, and Dylan, were never far from his thoughts and brought him joy with every visit. After her teaching career she had worked for 17 years with the Federal Government in the Department of National Defence.She will be sadly missed by her family and friends and will be remembered as a great lady. Matthew would do anything for anybody and enjoyed doing yard work for seniors. He took great pride in everything he did but most of all he enjoyed helping others. He loved outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. Matthew loved all music and really enjoyed going to live concerts. He loved his friends as much as he loved his family. He served in Labrador, Newfoundland, Britain, and North West Europe. He was employed with Superior Ice Cream. He was a woodsman and mill worker all his working years. As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also liked picking Bluegrass on the guitar. Edwin A. Wentzell 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Edwin A. Wentzell, 87, Beach Meadows, died January 6, 2007, in Queens General Hospital with family at his side. Born in Beach Meadows, he was a son of the late William Henry and Lettie Ellen (Wolfe) Wentzell. He first started working with his father as a carpenter and together they built many homes in Brooklyn and Liverpool. He also worked at the Bowater Mersey Papermill for a few years and then went to work for himself running a mik ranch, turkey farm, and a logging operation over a span of 40 years. After retiring, he spent his time fishing, lobstering, gardening, and managing his woodlots until the age of 83. He was a member of the local IOOF, Emmanuel United Church, Brooklyn Marina and Hilltop Seniors. Edwin will be fondly remembered for his kindness, his generous nature and his willingness to help family and friends. He will be sadly missed by many. Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred Kathleen Purdy; daughters, Joanne Daniels (David), Beach Meadows; and Pauline Whynot (Andrew), Mahone bay; grandchildren, Matthew, Jessie, and Jared. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay. Clyde Arnold Getson 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Clyde Arnold Getson, 85, Bridgewater, passed away November 2, 2007, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in LaHave, he was a son of he late Eldon and Mary (Publicover) Getson. He was a veteran of the Second World War where he was a POW for four years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24, Bridgewater for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret LeGay; brothers, Raymond (Marie), LaHave; Ralph (Evelyn), Upper LaHave. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held Sunday from 7-9 p.m. with a public Legion tribute service being held at 7 p.m., all in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater and from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, West Dublin. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24, Bridgewater Poppy Fund.
Alda Lorraine Publicover 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Charlene Veinotte Alda Lorraine Publicover, 78, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on January 27, 2007. Born in Dorchester, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Camelle and Euphemie LeBlanc. Alda worked for 17 years as a clerk with MT&T and was also a member of the Waverley Legion for 30 years. She had many interests including swimming as well as bowling, where she played in several leagues and won many trophies. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Eric; sons, Eric Jr., Northern Ontario; Gregory (Anne), Lower Sackville; Stephen, Lower Sackville; daughter, Pamela (Paul Connors); grandchildren; Alan, Michelle, Gregory; great-grandchildren, Eric and Justin. Alda came from a large family, being one of nine children. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, Lower Sackville. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Waverley Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Waverley Legion.
