Lionel Maxwell Deamond 1986 Halifax Chronicle Herald Oshawa- Funeral for Lionel Maxwell Deamond, 57, of Oshawa, formerly of Simpson's Corner, who died March 8 in Harwood, Ontario, was held here March 12. Burial was in Thornton Cemetery, Oshawa. Born in Simpson's Corner, he was a son of the late Earl and Damie (Hyson) Deamond. He was an employee of General Motors, Oshawa, for 27 years. He served in the Royal Canadian Army during thr Korean War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Oshawa; of Masonic Lodge, #706, Whitby; and of Elk Lodge. He was an adherent of the Anglican Church. Mrs. Lydia Varner 1927 Bridgewater Bulletin New Germany, November 5- There passed away at an early hour this morning at her home here, one of the oldest residents of the place in the person of Lydia, widow of Elias Varner, at the age of eighty-three years. Deceased was the daughter of the late Henry and Mrs. Feindel, New Germany, the former being brother to George Feindel, the first white child born in this place. In her immediate family, she is survived by brothers, Hezekiah, United States; and William and Obediah Feindel of New Germany; and by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Lohnes, Worcester. There are left also sons-Uriah, Dorchester, Massachusetts; Charles, Kenneth, Henry, Obediah, and Joshua, New Germany; and two daughters, Mrs. John Stuart, Milton, Massachusetts and Mrs. Alvin Gates, Stanbourne. Her husband died in 1894 and as a widow, with nine children, she had given a life of service to the family, the community, and the public at large. For many years she conducted a boarding house, open at all hours to accomdate all who came. No one was ever turned away on account of not possessing the price necessary to pay for a meal or a night's lodging. She was ever active in the affairs of the Anglican Church and in everything that pertained to the welfare of the community. Obituary 1927 Progress Enterprise The funeral of the late Mrs. Elias Varner (Lydia Drucilla) took place from her late residence on Wednesday afternoon. The services at home and church were conducted by Canon Harris of Mahone. The attendance at the funeral was large, bespeaking the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew her. Favourite hymns ,"Jesus, Lover of My Soul," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," " and "Peace, Perfect Peace" were sung. Canon Haris' fine address was taken from the text Isaiah 46:4. "Even down to old age will He be with thee." He touched on the early history of the old historic church "St. John's in the Wilderness" and the part the deceased had taken in the life of the church. She had the honour of being the first to be received by God into this church by baptism on November 14, 1844, by Rev. James Cochrane, first rector of the parish and was always a most dedicated church member. She was tenderly conveyed to her last resting place by her sons, Henry, Charles, Kenneth, and Uriah, who acted as pall bearers. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful. Merville Kenneth Mailman 1976 Halifax Chronicle Herald Kentville businessman Merville Kenneth (Ace) Mailman, 67, died Monday at home. Born in New Germany, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Luella (Conrad) Mailman. He served overseas during the Second World War in Germany, France, and Holland. He worked with Nova Scotia Power Corporation for 18 years. He owned and operated his own taxi business in Kentville and was a meat cutter with Wade's and TRA. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 6, Kentville and IODE Lodge, Kentville. He is survived by his second wife, the former Marie Adams; three sons, Donnie, Gagetown; Doug, Kentville; Brian, Coldbrook; two daughters, Brenda (Mrs. Jack Salsman), Greenwood; Linda (Mrs. Rick Cleveland), Kentville; three sisters, Phyllis (Mrs. Donald Hale) and Bernice (Mrs. Roy Shepard), both of Kentville; Mickey Reade, Coldbrook; two stepsons, Robert Adams and Ernie Adams, both of Fredericton; four stepdaughters, Diane (Mrs. Aubrey Fitzherbert), Grand Falls, New Brunswick; Rena Carimichael, Kentville; Gloria Lesveque, Fredericton; Darlene Nicholson, Quebec; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Winnifred (Tremaine) and Archibald Parker Armstrong. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James Bruce Crowe, New Germany and by one brother, three sisters, and two grandsons. She is survived by sons, H. Barclay Morley (Annette), Key Largo, Florida; Wilfred T. Morley (Barbara), Bridgewater; daughters, Vicki Bardon (Gary), Mahone Bay; and Beth Keech (James), Grand Pre; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dr. J. Bruce Crowe 1981 Halifax Chronicle Herald Dr. J. Bruce Crowe, 63, of New Germany, died Friday in Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Born in Annapolis Royal, he was the son of the late Dr. A. Boyd and Nell (MacDonald) Crowe. He graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1943 and immediatley following graduation joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps, serving in Canada and Europe. He was an alumnus of the year of the Dalhousie Medical Association in 1980. He was a former chief of staff of Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater. Dr. Crowe was a former school board member and a former elder and choir member of Epworth United Church, New Germany. At the time of his death, he was chief of the New Germany Voluteer Fire Department. He was an associate of Suttles and Seawinds. In his younger days, he played hockey with Mount Allison University hockey team. He was an avid sportsman and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Armstrong; two daughters, Vicki (Mrs. Gary Bardon), Bridgewater; and Beth (Mrs. James Keech), Grand Pre; two stepsons, Wilf Morley, Bridgewater; and Barclay Morley, Southport, Connecticut; three sisters, Nell and Val (Mrs. George Parker), both of Annapolis Royal and Dorothy (Mrs. John Page), Leamington, Ontario; and two grandchildren. In his earlier years he was a woodsman and also worked as a mechanic for Lohnes and Zwicker Massey Ferguson Tractors, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed working on his home farm and was an active snowmobile enthusiast during the earlier years of its introduction. He was a member of Parkdale-Maplewood Emmanuel Baptist Church and was also a member of the IOOF, Parkdale-Maplewood. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his wife, the former Lola Veinotte; daughter, Donna (Gary) Penney, Upper Northfield; sons, Chester, at home; Richard (Patricia), Maplewood; five grandsons; five great-grandhildren.
