OBIT # 5246 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 6 APRIL 1939 WILLIAM GRANT There passed away on Saturday last, at his home on Fraser's Mountain, one of New Glasgow's finest citizens in the person of WILLIAM GRANT in his fifty-fifth year. He had been ill for some time but his death was totally unexpected and came as a great shock and grief to his devoted family. He was born at Toney River and thirty years ago he married MINNIE GERMAINE and has since lived in New Glasgow. He leaves to mourn the passing of a loving husband and father, his wife, two sons, FLETCHER and WILLIAM, both at home and three daughters, OLIVE(Mrs.John Hunter)of Springhill; EDNA and LILLIAN, at home. Also surviving is one brother, PETER, who lives in Dorchester, Mass. Mr.Grant was a man highly respected and well liked. A good neighbour and a true friend, his passing at such an early age is a deep loss to the community. He was a loyal member of St.Andrew's Church but the main interest of his life was centered in his home and family. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon in the home of the deceased and in the absence of his pastor, Rev.Wm.Ooms, the service was conducted by Rev.Hugh Munroe,D.D. of Westminster Church. The hymns sung, led by St.Andrew's Church choir were,"The Lord's My Shepherd" and "O God of Bethel". A favorite hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" was sweetly sung by Miss Ethel Warren. The pall were, Messrs.A.W. MacNabb, Donald Sutherland, J.J.Chisholm, George Milne, W.M. Murray, and J.D. Murray. The large number present at the funeral and the quantities of beautiful floral tributes were marvellous testimony to the esteem in which the late Mr.Grant was held. Interement was at Riverside Cemetery.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 5 MARCH 1968 JESSIE BELLE MORROW, widow of William MORROW of North River, passed away in the Colchester Hospital late Sunday evening, February 23, at the age of 78. Mrs. MORROW had been in poor health for some time but only seriously ill for the past month. She was the former Jessie Belle MacKAY of Tatamagouche Mountain, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex MacKAY. She and her husband, William MORROW, who predeceased her two and a half years ago, had been residents at North River since 1945. Mrs. MORROW is survived by one daughter, Lola (Mrs. Carl MacQUARRIE) of North River; three sons, Robert, 339 Robie STREET, Truro; Earle and Lloyd, both of Hamilton, Ont., and ten grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Anna LOCKERBY, Tatamagouche, and Verda, (Mrs. W.E. TUCKER), 23 Archibald Street, Truro. The funeral was held from the Mattatall Funeral Home on February 26, at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. Delbert R. CHATREAU of St. James Presbyterian Church of which she was a member. The St. James choir, under the direction of Prof. Haralds BERINO as organist, sang the hymns, "Abide With Me," and "Unto the Hills." The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The pallbearers were Allan LOCKERBY, Douglas MacKAY, Daniel MacKAY, Isaac MacQUARRIE, Walter TUCKER and Stewart LYNDS. The committal service was held at the Lewis Memorial Chapel in Robie Street Cemetery. Interment will be in Coldstream Cemetery, Valley, in the spring.
Gifford Vernon Grimm 1987 Bridgewater Bulletin The death occurred on July 5, 1987 of Gifford Vernon Grimm, 98, at Shoreham Village Nursing Home, Chester. Although in failing health for some time, his passing was sudden. Born at Springfield, Annapolis County, he was the son of the late John and Sarah (Meisner) Grimm. In his early years he was a surveyor with the C.P.R. in Kenora, Ontario; later returning to Nova Scotia, he worked with the C.N.R., surveying the rail line from Dartmouth to Musquodoboit Harbour. After several years, he returned to his home and worked with "Springfield Trading Company," later managing the general store for 35 years. In 1974 he and his son, Maxwell, moved to Conquerall Bank. He is survived by two sons, Maxwell, Conquerall Bank; and John, Springfield; also by one granddaughter, Carol Ann Jennings, Halifax; and one great granddaughter, Jeannine Jennings; also a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret Smith of Chezzetcook and by eight sisters, Bertha, Theresa, Cora, Nettie, Effie, Lottie, Flora, and Nellie in infancy. The body rested at Langille's Funeral Home, New Germany, from where funeral services were held on July 8, 1987, conducted by Rev. David Keith, Springfield Baptist Church. Favourite hymns of the deceased were "His Eye is on the Sparrow," sung by Mr. Harry Delong and "How Great Thou Art," by Mrs. Harry DeLong. Burial was in Springfield Baptist Cemetery and pallbearers were Gordon Schnare, LeRoy Naugler, Ronald Veinot, Russell Conrad, Laurie Charlton, and Fletcher Varner.

John Zenas Rhodenizer 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Thursday, January 20, 2000. >From the collection of Gwen Christie John Zenas Rhodenizer, 91, Second Peninsula, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at Big Tancook Island, he was a son of the late William and Bessie (Stevens) Rhodenizer. In his earlier years he moved from the Big Tancook Island with his parents to reside at Mosher's Island, and then later to Second Peninsula, where he was a resident until his passing. John was a fisherman in his younger days and then worked as a shipbuilder from 1951 until his retirement with Smith and Rhuland, Shipbuilders, Lunenburg in 1979. While at Smith and Rhuland, he worked on the replica HMS Bounty and the Bluenose II. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sailor, gardener, and John also spent many hours at his model boat building. He was a pioneer and layperson in the formation of Pentecostal Churches in Lunenburg County and John was a faithful member of the New Life Christian Church, Bridgewater and Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church, Mahone Bay.His family and his work in the church were a very important part of his life and he will be greatly missed by many family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia and her husband Randy Smith, Second Peninsula; his son, John, Bath, Ontario; brother, William and his wife Gladys, Pleasantville; four grandchildren, Arthur and Gillian Smith and Sarita and Christopher Rhodenizer; and a great-granddaughter, Aceah; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife,the former Blanche Olive Jeane Cross; sisters, Ida, Beulah, Lilie, and Blanche; brothers,Clarence, Randolph, and Pearlie. Joseph R. Sapp Halifax Chronicle Herald Joseph R. Sapp, 75, of Bristol Avenue, Liverpool, died Wednesday in the Halifax Infirmary. Born at Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Raymond and Rose (Joseph) Sapp. In 1932, Mr. Sapp, his father and brother, John, established a soft drink bottling plant, Astoria Beverages, in Liverpool. He retired in 1971 as president of the company. He was a member of St. Gregory's Church. Surviving are four sons, Captain Raymond Sapp, CFB Borden, Ontario; Dr. Phillip Sapp, London, Ontario; James, Liverpool; Dr. John, Halifax; one brother, John, Liverpool; four sisters, Mamie (Mrs. Abram Saab), Halifax; Josie (Mrs. Frank Emin), Julia (Mrs. Harry Shedic), and Martha (Mrs. Fred Emin), all of Yarmouth; and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Lillian M. Maroun and a brother, Donald. The body is at Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Gregory's Church, Liverpool, Rev. Owen Connolly officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Born and lived at Riverport, she was daughter of the late Arthur and Minnie Ritcey. Jennie taught school in her community for many years and was a member of the Riverview Rebekah Lodge 56, Riverport. She was a member of Trinity United Church, Rose Bay, where she was past president of the UCW, a choir member and taught Sunday School for a number of years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Jennie's unique approach to life and the enduring qualitites that were hers alone were the basis of many a friendship formed. She is survived by stepsons, Donald Gerhardt, Halifax; Gordon Ritcey, Ottawa; stepdaughter, Virginia Woolett, Edmonton. She was predeceased by her first husband, Milton Gerhardt; her second husband, Everett Ritcey. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Trinity United Church, Rose Bay, Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. Interment will be in Shepherd's Hill Cemetery, Riverport, at a later dater. OBIT # 5244 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 28 DECEMBER 1944 EX-CONDUCTOR JOHN J. FRASER One of the most kindly, most considerate and faithful railway men that ever punched a ticket, died at his home in Stellarton on Thursday morning , a week ago. He was JOHN J. FRASER, ex-conductor, a native of Hopewell, who served his years in the service of the Canadian National Railway. and retired a few years ago, entitled to a well earned rest. For many years he was conductor on the Sunny Brae branch from Stellarton, and to the people of that beautiful East River valley he was friend , counsellor and helper. It is not belittling his splendid record to suggest that he was also their "errand boy". He did the banking for some, he made purchases for others and many hundreds of trips he saved those who depended upon the railway service, and who had buisness to transact in town. When he retired he took with him the prayers of those folk for the enjoyment of a long and deserved rest, and their thanks for deeds well done. So it was . But recently he was beset with an illness that called for months in hospital, and last week the end came and JOHN J. FRASER, whom everyone liked and held in the highest respect, went to rest with his Father. He is survived by his wife, formerly MISS JESSIE HALLIDAY, one son, ROLAND, and three daughhters, MABEL (Mrs.J.J.Hoare); EVA (Mrs.John Larsen) and LOU (Mrs.Raymond D. MacDonald) The funeral on Saturday was largely attended, from the late home of Mr.Fraser, South Foord Street, Stellarton. Floral tributes testified to the regard for the deceased. The service was conducted by Rev.R.D.MacIntosh, pastor of St.John -Sharon Church, assisted by Rev.Dr.Matheson. Interment was at St.Columba cemetery, Hopewell. Pall bearers were: Messrs. Fraser Lorimer, George D. MacKay, George A. MacKay, D.M. Bruce, W.H.MacDougall and Alonzo Murray.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 1 NOVEMBER 1954 JANE W. WILSON - Oliver - The community was saddened on Monday October 25, to learn of the passing of a highly respected citizen. Mrs. Jane W. WILSON, widow of the late James Wm. Wilson, in her 84th year. Mrs. WILSON was born at Tatamagouche Mountain, Col. Co., on September 16, 1870, daughter of the late John C. COCK and Mary (CONKEY). A woman of fine Christian character, she was blessed with a loving family and many friends. A member of United Baptist Church, she was always active and interested in the missionary work. She was a charter member of "The Abbie Gray Missionary Society." She was also a life member of the Oliver United W.M.S. Until the time of her last illness, she took an interest in all community affairs, and was always willing to help in any worthwhile cause. Except for short visits in U.S.A. and Western Canada with her children, the deceased has been a life-long resident of New Annan. She leaves to mourn the loss of a kind loving mother, four daughters and six sons, Carrie (Mrs. Aubrey BYERS) of New Annan; Hazel, (Mrs. Wm. OLIVER) of Cowley, Alberta; Mary (Mrs. Wilfred NICHOLS) Truro; Jean (Mrs. Murray TEED) Wentworth; James, Pictou; Earl, Bert and Alexander, Rose Prairie, B.C.; Seldon, Aklavik, N.W.T.; and Hedley at home; twenty seven grandchildren; and one brother Bert COCK of Denmark. A short funeral service was held from her late residence on Wednesday, October 27, at 1:30 p.m. The cortege then moved to New Annan United Baptist Church. The service at 2 p.m. was conducted by Rev. A.E. TODD, Westchester, assisted by Rev. Ralph WAGNER, New Annan. Rev A.E. TODD gave a sympathetic message, and Rev. R. WAGNER read the scripture and led in prayer. Music was in charge of Mrs. Fred LANGILLE, assisted by Central New Annan choir. Hymns sung were, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" at the house, "The Lord's My Shepherd," "The Beautiful Garden of Prayer' and a solo by Mrs. Aubrey Tucker, "Saved by Grace" at the church. At the graveside, "Meet Me There" was sung. Pallbearers were nephews, Henry STEVENSON, Aubrey WILSON, Kasson SWAN and Seldon SWAN. The floral tributes were beautiful, showing the esteem in which she was held by her friends and relatives. Interment was in Bell Gift Cemetery, beside her late husband, who predeceased her 15 years ago. Harry BONNYMAN, Tatamagouche, was funeral director. Six children and nine grandchildren were present at the funeral.
Arthur Joseph Mason Redden 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald >From the collection of Gwen Christie Arthur Joseph Mason Redden, 57, Cambridge, died suddenly on November 6, 2000, in the Valley Regional Hospital. A long-time resident of Bridgewater, Arthur was an avid sportsman who spent many happy hours fishing the LaHave River. He also enjoyed hunting, curling, and golf. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy until 1970 before embarking on a career at Michelin from which he retired in 1999. Arthur is survived by his sons, Derrick (Kim), Hebbville; Michael (Lisa), Lawrencetown; grandchildren, Hana, Hayden, Sebastian, Joshua, and Matthew; sisters, Karen (Bob) Tumilty, Annapolis Royal; Pearl (Bob) Boyd, Lower Sackville; brother, Kerry (Ellie), Woodstock, Ontario; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Arthur was the former husband of Mary Redden, who served as a town councillor in Bridgewater. Cremation and a private family memorial have taken place. Mrs. Richard Spindler 1976 Mrs. Richard Spindler, age 68, Riverport, passed away at home after a short illness, on May 15, 1976. Born at Baker Settlement, she was the former Gladys May Ritcey, daughter of the late Angus and Agnes (Zinck) Ritcey. Surviving besides her husband are two son, LeRoy, residing at home; and Algean, East LaHave; a daughter, Joyce (Mrs. Melvin Lewis), Botwood, Newfoundland; two brothers, Fred, Bridgewater; and LeRoy, Baker Settlement; six grandchildren and a great grandson. She was predeceased by a son, Eric; brother, Calvin; and grandson, Dwight. Funeral service was held Thursday, June 17, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Rose Bay. Rev. Ray Elberson officiated. Hymns sung were "The Lord My Shepherd Is" and "Abide With Me." Interment was in Feltzen South Cemetery. Pallbearers were Amos Crouse, Paul Ritcey, Wilson Niford, Milton Gerhardt, Stuart Wentzell, and Fred Joudrey.
