UNKNOWN PAPER - 12 OCTOBER 1942 ARTHUR WILL MCLEOD - On Oct. 3 the community of Waugh's River and adjoining section were greatly shocked at the sudden death of a highly respected citizen in the person of Arthur Will McLEOD in his sixty-eight year. Although the deceased had not been in the best of health for some time, nevertheless, he was able to continue with his farm work and on Saturday morning while attending to his duties he was stricken with a heart attack from which he did not recover and was found by his sister shortly afterwards. He was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gordon McLEOD (nee Ellen NELSON). The deceased had lived practically all his life at the home residence, with the exception of a few years in the United States and Western Canada in his early manhood. Mr. McLEOD was of a quiet disposition a good citizen, and always ready to help in any good cause. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. The funeral was held from his late home on Monday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. and was very largely attended. His pastor Rev. James WILLIAMS of the Presbyterian Church in Tatamagouche of which the deceased was a member, ably conducted the service and spoke very fittingly from the 11 Chap. of St. John and the 25th Verse. "I am the resurrection and the Life" also read passages from the following Chap., "St. John 14, 1 Corin. 15., Rev. 21. The hymns sung were "The Lord is My Shepherd," "Abide with me" and "the Sands of Time are Sinking." The floral offerings were lovely. He is survived by his wife and one sister Eliza. The only surviving member of a family of seven, three brothers and four sisters. The pall bearers were, William NELSON, Kenneth SUTHERLAND, Minard HAYMAN, Peter WATT, Gordon HAYMAN, Laurence SUTHERLAND. Interment was at the Falls Cemetery.
OBIT # 5261 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 21 DECEMBER 1944 MRS. THOMAS BLACKWOOD One of Westville's oldest and highly esteemed citizens, was called by death with the passing of MRS.THOMAS BLACKWOOD at her home, Cowan Street, at the age of 93. Mrs. Blackwood , the former JEAN JONES, was born in Scotland but resided in Westville for many years. Before coming here she resided in Joggins and Thorburn, where her late husband, who passed away 30 years ago was mine manager and also served as Inspector of Mines for Pictou County. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Blackwood was exceptionally bright and alert. The death of her daughter, MRS.W.C. DICK, last May was a grievous shock to her. A son DAVID predeceased her some years ago. Mrs. Blackwood travelled four times to her native Scotland, where two surviving sisters live. She was a faithful member of St.Andrew's Church and an honary member of the W.M.S. of that congregation. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, JAMES BLACKWOOD, Moncton; THOMAS BLACKWOOD, Springhill; WILLIAM BLACKWOOD,Glace Bay; and MRS.ALEX BARNHILL, Montreal, who has been in Westville the past six months. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren survive. Rev.Dr. George S. Mitchell, Pictou, former pastor of St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church assisted by the present pastor, Rev.Herbert M. Buntain officated at the funeral service held from her late home, Tuesday, Dec.12, with interment at the Auburn cemetery.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 13 SEPTEMBER 1943 GEORGINA MACDONALD - There passed away at her home in Tatamagouche on Tuesday, Sept. 7 Georgina, wife of Joseph MacDONALD. Mrs. MacDONALD was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George McKAY, of Earltown. After her marriage her home was for some years at Ferguson's Crossing and later in Tatamagouche, where she had many friends. She was of a quiet home loving disposition and was until illness prevented, interested in the welfare of the community in which she lived. For over thirteen years she has been an invalid and everything possible was done for her comfort. She leaves besides her husband and son Ernest, three sisters, Mrs. HENDERSON, of Boston, Mass.; Mrs. BAILEY, of Pugwash, and Mrs. Rufus MacNUTT, of Sandville. The funeral on Thursday at her home was largely attended. The floral tributes were lovely. Rev. J. WILLIAMS officiated and music was provided by members of the choirs of Sedgewick Memorial and Sharon choirs. Interment was in the family lot in Lockerby Cemetery.

He was for years a coal mine manager and a very efficient one. He always held the highest respect of those for whom he operated and the general public. In every walk of life he was very much regarded as a citizen and man of sterling integrity and worth and as a genial and courteous gentleman. His friends were many and his passing will recall kindly memories of the fine manner of man that he was. Of late years his health had not been good and during his trying illness he was lovingly cared for by his faithful daughter, MRS. SPROSEN. The late Mr. MacIntosh was prominent in local Masonic circles and a great favourite of the members of that fraternity. (Some missing)
UNKNOWN PAPER - 13 SEPTEMBER 1943 MRS. JOHN A. BAILLIE - Many friends will learn with regret of the sudden passing of Mrs. John A. BAILLIE at her home of East Earltown on Sunday evening, Sept. 5. She was enjoying her usual health until Sunday afternoon when she complained of not feeling well and in the evening passed peacefully away to her eternal home. Mrs. BAILLIE was the former Leta SUTHERLAND and was born at Earltown 71 years ago the daughter of the late Donald M. SUTHERLAND and Mary MacKAY SUTHERLAND. She was a devoted member of the Earltown Presbyterian Church and a faithful member of the choir. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her for her kind and cheerful disposition. She is survived by her sorrowing husband four half brothers, Robert SUTHERLAND of Winnipeg, James SUTHERLAND of Roxbury, Mass., U.S.A., John J. and Hugh SUTHERLAND of Earltown. A short service was held at the home at 1 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Church at 2 p.m. conducted by her pastor Rev. McWILLIAMS assisted by Rev. Mr. DAVIES, of Tatamagouche United Church. The hymns sung were "The Lord's My Shepherd", "Peace Perfect Peace" and "Abide With Me." Pall bearers were Douglas MURRAY, Russel MacKAY, Kenneth SUTHERLAND, Sutherland BAILLIE, George BAILLIE and Alexander MacKENZIE. Burial was at the Earltown Village Cemetery. The many beautiful flowers were a silent token of the esteem in which the deceased was held.

Roger Fraser Hirtle 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Friday, January 21, 2000. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Roger Fraser Hirtle, 83, Dayspring, passed away January 19, 2000, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at Dayspring, he was a son of the late Titus William and Emily Mae (Fraser) Hirtle. Roger served in the navy from 1940-1945 as a lieutenant during the Second World War. He attended Acadia University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1946. He then attended the Nova Scotia Technical College in Halifax and graduated withh his engineering degree on May 15, 1948. After that, he was employed with the Nova Scotia Department of Highways, Halifax from 1948 until his retirement in 1977. Upon retirement he moved to Dayspring and was secretary treasurer of Dayspring Cemetery for 12 years. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24, Bridgewater. He is survived by wife Luella Oreene (Messinger) (MacLean); stepson, Donald and wife Patricia MacLean, Halifax; stepdaughters, Iva Gale, Bridgetown; Ann Alcorn, Dayspring; sister, Leone Wright, Massachusetts; nine step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; nephews Michael Hiltz, David Hiltz, both of Ontario; John Hiltz, Brookfield. He was predeceased by sisters, Mabel Burns, Lottie Simmons, Daisy Bell, Evelyn Hiltz. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater, Rev. He was 22 years of age.
Thelma Evangeline Dunn 1988 Bridgewater Bulletin Thelma Evangeline Dunn, 66 years, of Halifax, died Sunday, October 2, 1988, in Halifax. Born at Springfield, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Ann E. (Gesner) Dunn. She was a veteran of World War II and retired employee of the Provincial Tax Commission. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Clifford Hallett), Middleton; and Mrs. Cora Wilson, Waterville, Maine; and one brother, William Dunn, Springfield. She was predeceased by one sister, Agnes. The body rested in the Warren T. Roop Funeral Home in Middleton. Ernest Guilford Durling 1974 Bridgewater Bulletin Ernest Guilford Durling of Somerville, Mass., passed away suddenly at his home on December 24th.,1974, at the age of 73. Born at Springfield, Annapolis County, he was a son of Guilford and Bessie (Roop) Durling. Until his retirement, he was employed with Baker's School Supplies of Cambridge, Mass. Surviving are a son, Richard of Waltham, Mass.; and two daughters, Barbara, Mrs. George Roberts and Velma, Mrs. Charles Withrow, both of Lexington, Mass. Also surviving are three brothers, R.C. of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; Charles, Chester, New Hampshire; and George of Quincy, Mass; and one sister, Mrs. Hazel Grimm of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by one sister and three brothers. Interment was in Lexington, Mass.

OBIT # 5253 - EVENING NEWS - MARCH 28,1939 The funeral of the late Dr. C.C. MacINTOSH was held yesterday under the auspices of the Presbytery of the United Church. In the morning at ten o'clock a service was held in St. James Church, Antigonish, where the deceased had ministered for the past seven years. In the afternoon a second service was held in Sharon-St. John Church, Stellarton. It was very largely attended, the large church being filled to capacity by those anxious to pay a tribute to the memory of the late clergyman. The service was in charge of Rev. Gerald Rogers, Pictou. He was assisted by Rev. Mr. Matthews, Truro, and Rev, Donald Fraser, Stellarton, who read the passages of scripture; Rev. Mr. Stirling of Scotsburn, who led in prayer; Rev. Prof. James Falconer, of Pine Hill College, who paid tribute to the interest he took in Pine Hill. Rev. T.E. McLennan, present minister of Sharon-St. John , on behalf of the people of that church paid tribute to the memory of their former pastor. Rev. Mr. McDonald of Hopewell pronounced the benediction. A very large choir under the direction of Mr. C. Banks led the singing. Following the church service the Freemasons of Keith Lodge No.23 of which Dr. MacIntosh had been a Past Master as well as Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, took charge of the remains and they were interred with Masonic honours in Brookside cemetery.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 6 MAY 1944 JAMES H.D. MACKAY - Denmark - The death occurred at Kellogg Idaho, on April 14, of James H.D. MacKAY, youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. MacKAY of Balmoral Mills. "Jim Herdie" as he was familiarly called left his native province in 1901 going first to British Columbia. For a number of years he lived in Trail B.C., where he worked as carpenter with the Canadian consolidated and mining company. Leaving Trail he finally settled in Kellogg Idaho where he spent the last 16 years. The funeral was held in April 16, and many friends gathered to pay their last respects, to one who had spent many years in that town. The Funeral Home where the service were held was banked with beautiful floral tributes which came from various parts of British Columbia and Nevada as well as from Idaho, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The burial services was under the auspices of the Masonic Order, of which Mr. MacKAY was a member. He is survived by his wife who was formerly Miss Janie HASTINGS of Watervale, Pictou Co., and one brother George A. of River John. The sisters Margaret, of Balmoral Mills, Vannie (Mrs. A.E. YEAW) of Pictou, N.S. and Mrs. Ethel MATHESON of North Earltown. A nephew John W. MacKAY, of Spokane Wash, attended the funeral services. Sincere sympathy is expressed for the lonely widow, also for the sisters and brothers who are called upon to bear the loss of a loved one.
OBIT # 5251 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 9 NOVEMBER 1944: MISS JENNIE ROBSON-WESTVILLE Many friends in her home town and throughout the county, were grieved to hear of the sudden death of MISS JENNIE ROBSON, which occured at her home on Diamond Street after an illness of only two hours. Miss Robson was the last surviving member of the family of the late Mr.and Mrs.THOMAS ROBSON, and resided throughout her life in Westville. Her sister, ADA, Mrs.Douglas Higgens, predeceased her a few years ago, while her brother, CLARENCE ROBSON, passed away only a few months ago. Miss Robson was a member of St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She is survived by several relatives in New Glasgow, Amherst and Dartmouth, who came to attend the funeral service which was held Sunday afternoon, Nov.5th, from her late home, followed by interment in Auburn cemetery.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 14 JULY 1954 CHRISTINE MARGARET FERGUSON - Tatamagouche - This community and various other districts were saddened to learn of the sudden death of Christine Margaret FERGUSON, which occurred at her home on Tuesday, June 29, following a brief illness. Deceased was 57 years of age, and was a daughter of the late George and Christine MacKAY BAILLIE, West Branch. She was a registered nurse, a graduate of Victoria General School for Nursing in 1923, and a faithful member of Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche. The funeral service, which was largely attended, was held from her late residence, and was conducted by Rev. R.L. WAGNER of the United Church, West New Annan. Favorite hymns, led by Sharon choir were sung, "The Lord is My Shepherd," "There Is a Green Hill Far Away," and "Abide With Me." Surviving besides her husband, are three sons, Harold of Hamilton, Ontario; Baillie at home; James a graduate of University of California, residing in San Francisco; one daughter, Isabel, a graduate of Mount Allison University, at home. Another daughter pre-deceased her in infancy; two brothers, James of San Francisco; Daniel of Westville; and one sister, Barbara, (Mrs. John A. MacKENZIE) San Francisco. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, testifying to the esteem in which Mrs. Ferguson was held. Pallbearers were, Murray GUNN, Murray MacCARA, Livingstone FERGUSON, Allister FERGUSON, Gilmore MacLELLAN, all nephews and Charles LANGILLE, a neighbor. Interment was in the family plot in Sunnyside Cemetery at Lockerby's.
Moyle Kitchener Rafuse 1997 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Friday, August 29, 1997. Moyle Kitchener Rafuse, 80, Dartmouth, died August 28, 1997, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born July 18, 1917, at Falkland Ridge, he was a son of the late Edward and Gladys (Veinot) Rafuse. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was employed with the city of Dartmouth for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Pauline Hannam; daughter, Sheila Brown (Blair Gammon), Porter's Lake; son, Kevin and wife Elaine Rafuse, Lower Sackville; stepdaughter, Shirley (Mrs. Barry Doyle), Beaverbank; stepsons, Sutton Walker, Dartmouth; Blair and wife Gail, Lower Sackville; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, David Allan Rafuse; brothers, Harold, Lloyd ;sister, Eileen Zinck; stepson, Harry Walker. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, funeral 10 a.m. Saturday, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Burial will be in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Family flowers only.
