Mrs. Esther Mosher There passed away early Wednesday morning, August 11th., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wallace Corkum, Feltzen South, Mrs. Esther Mosher, widow of William Mosher, at the age of 64 years. She had been in failing health for the past three years with a heart ailment. Before her marriage she was Esther Corkum, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Corkum, Feltzen South. She is survived by two daughters, Phoebe (Mrs. James Meisner), of Lunenburg; Amy (Mrs. Wallace Corkum), of Feltzen South; one son, Titus, also of Feltzen South; one brother, Elam Corkum; two sisters, Eva (Mrs. Norman Corkum), Maggie , widow of Eben Creaser. Eight grandchildren also survive. Her husband predeceased her nine years ago. Three brothers, Samuel, Hilbert, and Albert, predeceased her several years ago. Funeral services were held from the home of her daughter on Thursday afternoon at 2:30, and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. J. Goos. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran Chruch. Rev. Goos took as his text Psalm 90, verse 12: "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Hymns sung were "Abide With Me," "I Will Sing of my Redeemer," and "Rock of Ages." Pall-bearers were nephews of the deceased, Melvin Mosher, Milton Creaser, Carl Corkum, Emmerson Corkum, Malcolm Corkum, and Walter Corkum.
Harold B. Hebb 1984 Bridgewater Bulletin Conquerall Bank- Harold B. Hebb, 63, passed away at home after a short illness on July 4, 1984. Born at Hebbville, on September 9, 1920, he was the grandson of the late Hilton and Cassandra Hebb. Surviving are a daughter, Mary March of Wileville; a son, James of Conquerall Bank; four grandchildren and five step grandchildren. He retired from the Department of Transport seven years ago, after having worked for 17 years in Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island, NWT. He was a member of the West Nova Scotia Regiment, a veteran of World War II, and a Legion member. The Bridgewater Branch No. 24, conducted a memorial service on Thursday evening, July 5th.
OBIT # 5282 - EVENING NEWS - 28 FEB 1952 Scotsburn- The death of SMITH PATTERSON occured at his late home, Cross Roads, Roger's Hill, Feb.11. He was one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this community. Had he lived until Feb.27, he would have been 87 years old. A son of the late ROBERT and MARY (MacConnell) PATTERSON, he lived his entire life on the homestead, except for a brief period spent in the Canadian West.Despite his advanced age he was very active and took a keen interest in all that went on within his home and community. His interest was specially with the young people and as was his usual custom he attended the Christmas entertainment presented in December by the pupils of the Cross Roads School; his granddaughter was among those taking part.Mr.Patterson became ill one week previous to his death.He is survived by one son, ELMER, on the old homestead and by two daughters, CLARICE(Mrs.Forbes MacLean) of Durham; and MARY RANGE, technologist in the Allerton Hospital, Allston, Mass; four grandsons and two granddaughters.He was predeceased by his wife in 1926 and also by three brothers and four sisters.A short service was held at the home Feb.14 followed by service in Durham Presbyterian Church of which he was a member and faithful attendant, at 2:30 pm. Both were conducted by His pastor, Rev.J.M. Grant. The church choir sang "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Nearer My God To Thee", both having been requested by him before his death, as was his favorite hymn, "Shall We Meet Beyond The River", sung by Mrs.Gordon MacKay, Trenton.The pall bearers were: Gerald and David Patterson and Kenneth MacLean(grandsons), Rob Robley, Fraser Sutherland and george Patterson.
UNKNOWN PAPER - DECEMBER 1902 JOANNA MURRAY - On Christmas night, at Tatamagouche Mountain, there passed away the loving and respect wife of Angus MURRAY. Her maiden name was Joanna McLEAN, of Waugh's River. As a girl, she was loved by all who knew her. Some 13 years ago she married Angus MURRAY, and they had their home at Tatamagouche Mountain. They had a family of five, four boys and the youngest, a little girl of two and a half years. Mrs. MURRAY was a firm believer in Christian work. She took a very great interest in training her children for Sabbath school work. During the last few hours on earth she was troubled about her children, especially her little girl. The little one was very robust, and never known to be sick before; when Wednesday she complained of being sick, and on New Year's night she passed to the "Great Beyond," about the same hour her mother had passed away the previous week. This added more grief to the sorrowing husband and children. The little one had spoken quite frequently about her mother during the week and expected her back. Mrs. Murray leaves an aged mother and three sisters, all to mourn the loss of a loving daughter and sister.
Richard Samuel Hirtle 1981 Bridgewater Bulletin Richard Samuel Hirtle, 82, beloved husband of Mrs. Mabel Hirtle, passed away July 22, 1981 at the Bethany Care Centre, Calgary. He was born at Indian Path. Service was conducted at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour on Friday, July 24, at 10 a.m., Rev. John Anderson officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
Albert McKean 1896 Lunenburg Progress Published: October 28, 1896. Mr. Albert McKean, a well-to-do merchant and shipowner of Pleasantville, died on Saturday night. He was the youngest son of the late William McKean of Conquerall Bank. Mr. McKean leaves a widow (the daughter of Francis Keiser, Esquire of Conquerall Bank), two daughters and one son.
Joshua Hector Tipert 1993 Halifax Chronicle Herald Joshua Hector Tipert, 83, New Germany, died June 8, 1993, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at New Germany, he was a son of the late Arthur James and Flora Belle (Lohnes) Tipert. He served in England during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He had served with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in Halifax and Dartmouth. He was a member of St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican Church, New Germany and Bridgewater Curling Club. He is survived by a daughter, Susan (Mrs. Paul Feener), Front Centre; two sons, Richard, Dartmouth; Wayne, Sydney River; two sisters, Ferne, Hazel, both of New Germany; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Effie St.Clair Legge; two brothers, Bernard and Forrest. Visittion will be 2-4 ,7-9 p.m. today in New Germany Funeral Home. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday in St. John-in the- Wilderness Anglican Church, Rev. Peter Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Donations may be made to St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican Church or any charity.
Jeanette Christine Robar 2000 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Thursday, February 24, 2000. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Jeanette Christine Robar, 57, Harmony, Queens County, passed away peacefully in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, on February 22, 2000. Born at Harmony, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Martha (Oickle) Mansfield. She was a member of the North Queens Fire Association Ladies Auxiliary and an avid gardener. She loved her family, flowers, bingo, penny auctions, and going fishing. Jeanette is survived by her husband, Norman; sons, Douglas (Ellen), Westfield; Brian (Janette), Harmony Mills; four grandchildren who she loved with all her heart, Tiffany, Blair, Christopher, and April; sisters, Rita (Laurie) Croft and Kaye (Bill) Fancy, St. Catharines, Ontario. She was predeceased by her sisters, Vivian (Croft) Barry, Freda Mailman, Noreen MacDonald, and Betty in infancy; brothers, Carlton, Murray, Basil, and Randolf. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today in R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, in Calvary Baptist Church, South Brookfield ,Rev. Mark Reid officiating. Mrs. Henry H. McFarland 1976 Bridgewater Bulletin Mrs. Henry H. McFarland of New Germany, 82, passed away on Thursday, September 16, at the D.M. Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at Gagetown, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Gardiner and Lavinia Baldwin. Mrs. McFarland lived for many years at Kensington, P.E.I., in Pictou, and for the past twenty-five years in New Germany. She was predeceased by her husband in May of this year. She is survived by a son, Harold Bruce McFarland, Halifax; a daughter, Mrs. Michael Boland, of Toronto; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy Gardiner, Norton, N.B. Funeral services for the late Mrs. McFarland were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Anglican Church of St. John's in the Wilderness, New Germany, with the Rev. Tattrie officiating.
Mrs. Samuel Meisner 1950 Bridgewater Bulletin Friends will learn with regret of the sudden passing of one of New Germany's highly respected citizens, Mrs. Samuel Meisner, at her home on the evening of January 11th. Mrs. Meisner, who was in her 87th. year, was very alert for one of that advanced age, and was up and about as usual. Death came suddenly as she was preparing to retire for the night. Of a quiet and kindly nature, she was well liked by all who knew her. Before marriage, Mrs. Meisner was Miss Mary Ramey, daughter of the late Samuel Ramey and Sarah Kelley Ramey of Bridgewater. She was the last surviving member of that family. Her husband predecased her several years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy, of the staff of A.&M Bell, Ltd., Halifax; three sons, Harold in Saskatchewan; Ralph in British Columbia; and Frank, at home. There is one granddaughter. The funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at St. John's Anglican Church, conducted by the rector, Rev. W.R. Martell. The pall bearers were Horton Chesley, Laurie Hamm, Milton and Roger Varner. The floral offerings were beautiful, a silent tribute to the departed.
OBIT # 5278 - THE EVENING NEWS - FEBRUARY 27,1952 Pictou- The death of MRS.L.A. MacLEAN, wife of REV. LACHLAN A. McLEAN And one of Canada's most distinguished women painters, occured at the home ofher daughter, Mrs. R.G.E. WARK, Montreal, Feb.21, at the age of 78 years. The former SARAH JEAN MUNRO, she was a daughter of the late CAPTAIN and MRS. WILLIAM C. MUNRO of Pictou. She began studying voice at the Boston Conservatory, but midway through had a change of heart about her career and began the serious study of painting in Boston. She continued her studies at Liverpool, England and at Heatherly's School of Art in London, where she obtained her diploma. After her return from England she gave a command exhibition for the Marquis of Lorne, then Governor-General of Canada. The permanent Gallery of Ottawa purchased one of her recent works and a copy was made to be hung in the Court House in Montreal. She was a member of the Women's Art Society for many years and was organizer and first covener of the Studio Group. Greatly interested in young people's work in the church, she was the first chairman of the Girl's Work Board of the Religious Education Association. She held a number of executive offices with the Woman's Missionary Society, being President of the St.John, N.B. Presbyterial at one time. She was also on the United Church Presbyterial and Conference Branch executives in the Quebec and Montreal areas. A cousin, HON. E.M. MacDONALD was Minister of Militia and Defence during World War One. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, MRS. WARK; a grandson and granddaughter. The funeral was held from the Pictou United Church Sunday afternoon, Feb.24, with Rev.A.H. Moore officiating , assisted by Rev.A.T. MacDonald of Merigomish and Rev. Dr.L.H. MacLean, Pictou. Two hymns "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Dear Lord and Father Of Mankind", were sung. Interment was at Haliburton cemetery.
UNKNOWN PAPER - 19 JANUARY 1927 ANGUS MURRAY - Word was received here today by friends of the sudden death at Tatamagouche Mountains, of Angus MURRAY, one of the best known and highly respected residents of Earltown. Mr. Murray was in his usual good health and attending to his daily morning routine of farm work. In the afternoon he went out to a near by wood lot to cut down trees. When he did not arrive home for the evening meal, the family became alarmed and went to search for him, when they were shocked to find his lifeless body lying beside his unfinished work, death being due to heart failure. Deceased was in the 74th year of his age.
Samuel Josiah Meisner 1946 Bridgewater Bulletin One of New Germany's oldest and most respected citizens, Samuel Josiah Meisner, passed away at his home on Friday, August 15, following a long period of failing health. He was the son of the late Jacob and Eve Meisner and was born at "The Ovens," Lunenburg County, over 88 years ago. He had been a resident of this place for over twenty years. He is survived by his wife, formerly Mary Ramey of Bridgewater, and by three sons, Harold in Saskatchewan; Ralph in British Columbia; Frank, at home; also one daughter, Dorothy of Halifax. One sister, Bertha, Mrs. JonathanMorrison, of Liverpool also survives. A son, Fred, predeceased him during the First Great War. Funeral services were held on Saturday at St. John's Anglican Church, conducted by Rev. W.H. Chard. Hymns sung were "Peace, Perfect Peace,""Lead, Kindly Light," and " Abide With Me." The pall-bearers were Willis Veinot, Charles Varner, Clarence Mosher, Donald deLong, Horton Chesley, and Roswell Feindel. The floral offerings were beautiful, a silent tribute to the departed, testifying to the high esteem in which he was held by a large circle of friends who extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald deWitt deLong 1968 Bridgewater Bulletin Many friends and relatives were saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Mr. and Mrs. Donald deWitt deLong on November 6th., when the car in which they were driving was in collision with a train at Gold River. The late Mr. deLong was born at New Germany, November 7th., 1891, the eldest son of the late Isaac B. deLong and Cora (Feindel) deLong. With the exception of attending Mt. Allison Academy in 1912 and serving as a Lieutenant with the Canadian Army in Halifax during the First World War, Mr. deLong spent his entire lifetime in New Germany where he was a well known merchant conducting business originally established by his father 80 years ago. Up until a number of years prior to his death, Mr. deLong was active in community affairs. He was a devoted chuch worker and a member of the Epworth United Church, being a former Sunday School Superintendent and choir leader. He was general treasurer of the New Germany United Church Circuit, a position he held for 30 years, and was also formerly Secretary-Treasurer of the local Trustee Board, and at the time of his death, Senior Elder of his church. In his earlier years he was an enthusiastic and valued member of the New Germany Band and was also active in the former Reserve during the Second World War. He leaves to mourn his passing, one daughter, (Monica), Mrs. Kenneth Walmesley,Halifax; a sister, Mrs. C.H. Little, Waterloo, Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister and three brothers. Mrs. deLong was born at Mahone Bay on May 15th., 1892, the former Muriel Mason. She was the youngest daughter of the late Captain Enoch Mason and Sophia (Smith) Mason. In 1915 she graduated in nursing from Salem Hospital in Salem, Mass., and from the time of her marriage in 1916 was a resident of New Germany. In her earlier years, Mrs. deLong was an active worker in the Epworth United Church, having been Cradle Roll Superintendent for approximately 25 years; Sunday school teacher; and faithful member of the choir. She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter, (Monica), Mrs. Kenneth Walmesley, Halifax and a niece, Alcorn (Mrs. Robert Shaw), of Bridgetown. Three sisters pre-deceased her. Funeral services for the late Mr. and Mrs. deLong were held from the Epworth United Church, Saturday afternoon, November 9th., the Rev. James Crooks officiating. Pall bearers were Dr. J.B. Crowe, Kendall Mosher, Owen MacKay, Joseph Hall, Crosfield Bell, George Zwicker, Reginald Trethewey, and Maynard Carver. Interment was in the family plot in Lakeside Cemetery.
Mrs. John Keizer 1910 Lunenburg Progress Rose Bay and Riverport News February 16, 1910. Mrs. John Keizer of Lower Kingsburg, died on Saturday at the advanced age of 89 years. She is survived by one son and two daughters. Services were held on Tuesday by the Rev. George C. Robertson, pastor of the Presbyerian Church here.
Marion Rosalind Mossman 1910 Lunenburg Progress Rose Bay and Riverport News February 16, 1910. Marion Rosalind, the two month old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Mossman, Rose Bay, died on Thursday last and was buried on Saturday. Services were conducted by the Rev. H.J. Behrens.
Mrs.F.L. Frederick 1947 Bridgewater Bulletin The death of Ellen Gusandra (nee Ellen Woodworth), the wife of Farish Frederick, Waterloo, took place November 13, at about 9 p.m., in the home of her sister, Mrs. Roscoe Joudrey, at Bridgewater. Her sister cared tenderly for her up to her last. Mrs. Frederick was 54 years old on February 25th last and was ill for the past few months. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Pauline and Gladys, at home; one sister, Mary (Mrs. Roscoe Joudrey), Bridgewater; four brothers, Maurice of Chelsea; Grafton of Somerville, Mass.; Edmund of Waterloo; Isaac of Bridgewater; two half-brothers, Joseph and Elias of chelsea; a brother, Asher of bridgewater; and two half-brothers, Daniel of Laconia and William of Moser's River, all predeceased her. She was a member of St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, Waterloo. She enjoyed a visit from her pastor, Rev. Lukens, upon which she received private communion and prayers. Her passing came as a shock to Rev. Lukens because she passed jokes and was friendly at that hour, 5 p.m. on November 13. She was conscious up to the last. The committal service was at the cemetery in Waterloo and service at the church with her pastor, Rev. Lukens, officiating ,who gave a comforting message to the mourners, taking his text from II Kings 30-1. The hymns sung were "Our God, our Help in Ages Past," "Asleep in Jesus" and "Rock of Ages," the first one being the same as for her mother and father. The pall-bearers were Locke and Charles Himmelman, Wilbert Garber, and Gilbert Whynot.
Alda Mae Varner 1987 Bridgewater Bulletin Alda Mae Varner, 81, New Germnay, died Tuesday, June 23, 1987, at home. Born at Simpson's Corner, she was a daughter of the late James William and Amanda (Oickle) Emeno. She was a member of St. John's in the Wilderness Anglican Church, New Germany and Rosedale New Horizons Senior Citizens Club, New Germany. She is survived by two daughters, Doris (Mrs. G. Rollen Veinot), New Germany; Mildred (Mrs. Karl MacKay), Upper Northfield; a son, Ray, New Germany; three sisters, Doris Hedge, Auburn, Mass.; Violet Turner, New Germany; Mable Snyder, Simpson's Corner; 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Arleigh Edward; two sisters, Mildred and Claudia; five brothers, George, Garfield, Everett, Robert, and Charles; and a great grandson, Wayne.
Arleigh Edward Varner 1984 Bridgewater Bulletin Arleigh Edward Varner, 87, of New Germany, died Sunday, January 8, 1984, in Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at New Germany, he was the son of the late Joseph and Adelia (Veinot) Varner. He was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, New Germany. He was a veteran of the First World War and a member of Branch 102, Royal Canadian Legion, New Germany; also a member of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Nova Scotia; and the Rosedale New Horizons Senior Citizens. He worked for over fifty years with Zwickers' Box Factory, New Germany. He is survived by his wife, the former Alda May Emina; two daughters, Doris (Mrs. G. Rollen Veinot), New Germany; Mildred (Mrs. Karl MacKay), Upper Northfield; a son, Ray, New Germany; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers, Enoch, Maynard, Albert, Arthur, and Seth; six sisters, Inez, Bertha, Flo, Sadie, Alice, and Abby; two half-sisters, and a great-grandson, Wayne.
