Bernice Helen Goodwin 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald Bernice Helen Goodwin, 77, Halifax, died May 24, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born at Brass Hill, Shelburne County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Pauline (Harding) Penney. Bernice retired from the Halifax Infirmary as the Director of Volunteer Services. She was a former member of the Kinette Clubs of Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton, St. John's and Ottawa. She was also a member of the Canadian Directors of Volunteers in Health Care and the Nova Scotia Association of Volunteer Directors. She was a member of the Jean Hogan Unit of the United Church Women and an Elder at Rockingham United Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond R. She is survived by her daughters, Susan, Bridgewater; Judi (Gerald ) Kedy, Halifax; son, Allan (Suzanne), Calgary; and her much-loved grandchildren, Erin and Scott Kedy, Halifax; Kelsey, Andrew, Jillian, and Timothy Goodwin, Calgary; Jason Kedy, Dartmouth; brother, Gerald (Judy) Penney, Bridgewater; several nephews and a niece. A thoughtful and caring person, always supportive of family and friends, she touched the lives of many. She will be always remembered and sadly missed. Arrangements to be made by J.A. Laurentia Wile 1909 Bridgewater Bulletin Published: June 1, 1909. After a brief illness, Laurentia, wife of Norman Wile of Wileville, passed away on the 24th, aged 64. She was the daughter of the late Alexander Johnson of Crouse Town. She was amiable in disposition and possessed of fine domestic and social qualities. Her death is a bereavement to her family and a loss to the community in which she lived.
OBIT # 5330 - EVENING NEWS - 15 JUNE 1953 Barney's River- The sudden death of WILLIAM SUTHERLAND, retired farmer, occured at the home of his niece at Rossfield on May 2, following a few days of illness. Funeral service was from the church at Kenzieville, and conducted by Rev.Messers. Morrison, Grant, MacKinnon, Wilson and Rollins, the church being filled to the doors. Mr. Sutherland was born at Rossfield Oct.20, 1854, and in his early years served his time as a wheelwright in New Glasgow, later moving to the United States, where he worked at his trade in a carriage factory, his pay amounting to $2.50 a day. Coming home he tried to purchase a farm in Polling Section 20, but could not find one for sale, but determined to make a home here, he took up a lot of forest land in Groveland, and with his axe started to clear off the wood, and built a log cabin to which he brought his wife, JANET IRVING, where they spent happy and prosperous years until her sudden death in 1922. From then until 1946 he continued alone, when he moved to the home of his niece, MRS. PETER T. CAVANAGH at Rossfield, until his death in his ninety-ninth year. Mr. Sutherland was interested in all things Scottish. The community's last Gaelic speaker, he could tell tales of the Highland Class, and was a great student of Burns poems and letters. A lover of flowers, he had a show place at Groveland from which many friends were presented with bouquets

Tatamagouche - Theodore LANGILLE, 76, of Tatamagouche, died Friday, Dec. 30th, in the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche. Born in Central New Annan, he was a son of the late King and Hannah (LANGILLE) LANGILLE. Surviving are one son, Malcolm and two granddaughters, Kim and Kelly, all of Nassau, Bahamas; two sisters, Ola SUTHERLAND, The Falls, Colchester County; Ada MURRAY, Tatamagouche Mountain; and one brother, Joseph Oliver, Colchester County. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Janie THOMPSON; and four brothers. Funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m., in the Tatamagouche Mountain United Church, Rev. Morley BENTLEY officiating. Burial was in the Tatamagouche Mountain cemetery.
Halifax Herald - Monday, 09 September 1946 - Page 1 - Snatch Block Hits Springhill Man In Number 4 Mine - Springhill, Sept. 8 - Struck by a snatch-block while supervising repair work in a shaft of No. 4 Mine on Saturday afternoon, William A. Cochrane, 49, of Springhill, died early this morning at All Saints Hospital without regaining consciousness. - Severe Injuries - He suffered a fractured skull, a broken jaw and shoulder and internal injuries. Few details of the accident were available here today. It was learned however, that the mine was not operating on Saturday afternoon and that Cochrane and a few workmen went down the shaft to do a little repair job. The snatch block, which is used to carry coal, suddenly broke loose when the pin fell out. Cochrane was unaware of this and was struck with terrific force on the head. He was rendered unconscious. First aid was rendered by fellow workmen and he was taken to the surface where a doctor was immediately summoned. When the extent of the victim's injuries were found to be critical he was ordered removed to the local hospital by ambulance. At the hospital it was stated that Cochrane had lost a considerable amount of blood. He was taken to the hospital unconscious and died at 1:30 a.m. today. - Heavy Force - Mine employees stated that the snatch block weighs approximately eight pounds and falling from a height, gathers considerable momentum so that it struck Cochrane with a terrific force. Cochrane was well known in this district, having lived here for some years. He was a highly respected citizen. He was a member or Eureka Lodge I.O.O.F., which he joined in 1934. He was a Past Grand Master of the lodge and took a keen interest in lodge activities. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Leslie and Roy Cochrane, who served overseas in World War II, his mother, who resides in Alma, N.B., and one brother, Medley Cochrane, of Parrsboro. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Note: Not sure where the A. came as a middle initial. His middle name was Lawrence. William L. OBIT # 5311 - EASTERN CHRONICLE - 28 NOV 1930 The people of McLennan's Mountain and vicinity were saddened by the passing away of HARVEY HEFFERMAN who was fatally wounded on Wednesday the 19th. In spite of efforts to save his life, he passed away at Aberdeen Hospital on Friday,, 21st. On Monday a great many friends gathered to pay their last tribute. The funeral services were conducted by Revs. C.C. McIntosh and H.A. Heffler of Stellarton assisted by the Choir of McLennan's Mountain Church. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss, besides his sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. JOSEPH HEFFERMAN, six sisters and two brothers, viz., MINNIE (Mrs. Nathan Snow); MARGARET (Mrs. Herman Clyburn); BARBARA, (Mrs. George Allard); LOUISE (Mrs. Frank Speers); HILDA, (Mrs. Frank Cornett); GOLDEN, (Mrs. David Brooks); HOWARD, in Ontario; and William at home. Also an aged grandmother, Mrs. Pellier, who makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hefferman. All the brothers and sisters were present at the funeral, with the exception of HOWARD, who was unable to come home. Harvey Hefferman was liked by all he came in contact with. He was always pleasant and cheerful, besides being a strong and willing worker, and faithful in carrying out his duties, and many expressions of regret at his untimely passing were heard. The Hefferman family have the sympathy of everyone in their sad bereavement. (*Harvey Hefferman was shot in a hunting accident. This was not in the obit)
UNKNOWN PAPER - JULY 1916 ALEX SUTHERLAND - Quite a number from here attended the funeral of the late Alex. SUTHERLAND of The Falls on Tuesday. They say it was the largest seen in that capacity for a long time. His death was a great shock to all who knew him. After going thru two serious operations at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, he past away on Saturday morning, the 15th. A young man of about 34 years of age, leaving his aged parents, wife, and a family of small children to mourn the loss of a kind, loving and industrious son, husband and father. While the father was in the hospital his oldest boy, a young lad, had the misfortune of having his collar bone broken. The sympathy of this entire community goes out to this much afflicted family.

Nellie Maude Eisener 2002 Bridgewater Bulletin Nellie Maude Eisener, 100, Barss Corner, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born at Spry Harbour, she was the daughter of the late James and Melinda Myers. She was a faithful member of the Barss Corner United Baptist Church. She is survived by sons, Ralston (Vivian) Eisener, Farmington; Judson Eisener, Wolfville; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ezra; daughter, Joyce Beck; sisters, Maggie, Janie, and Stella; brothers, Walter and Earlen. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Langille's Funeral Home, New Germany. Funeral service was held from Barss Corner United Baptist Church, August 14, 2002, officiated by Rev. Vaughan Henshaw. Pallbearers were grandsons Lyle Eisener, Ray Eisener, Arden Eisener, Earlen Eisener, Franklyn Eisener, and Mitchell Beck. Interment was in the Barss Corner Community Cemetery. Ezra Lyle Eisener 1987 Bridgewater Bulletin Ezra Lyle Eisener died Saturday, March 21, 1987, at home. Born at Cornwall, he was the son of the late Bennett and Ida (Sarty) Eisener. He was a woodsman; a caretaker of the animals at the Guides Meet, Lake William for seven years; and caretaker of Camp Kadimah for 35 years. He was a veteran of the First World War; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 102, New Germany; and of the United Baptist Church, Barss Corner. He is survived by his wife, the former Nellie Myers; a daughter, Joyce (Mrs. Douglas Beck), Barss Corner; two sons, Ralston, Farmington; Judson, Wolfville; three sisters, Enid (Mrs. Laurie Ramey), Barss Corner; Charity Wheeler, and Alma Joudrey, New Germany; a brother, Albert, Scarsdale; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by six sisters, Lila, Annie, Faith, Hope, and two in infancy; five brothers, Ira, Joseph, Collins, and two in infancy. John Ritcey Argus Ritcey's Cove News May 6, 1896. We are sorry to record the death of Mr. John Ritcey, Snr., which happened on the 27 inst. As Mr. Ritcey had been confined to his bed for most of the winter, his death was not unexpected. He reached an advanced age of years and was liked by all who met him.

Relatives and friends were saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Loie Hirtle of First South whose death occurred at the Victoria General Hospital on Tuesday, July 17th, 1962, following a brief illness. The late Mrs. Hirtle was born at East LaHave. She was the daughter of the late Sydney and Lottie Walters and was 63 years of age. Mrs. Hirtle was a devoted member of the Grace Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Marion (Mrs. Gilbert Rhuland), of First Peninsula; Marjorie (Mrs. Lawrence Croft), of Hebbville; Beulah (Mrs. Ervin Hirtle), of Wileville; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Mullock, Mahone Bay; Mrs. Stanley Beck, Halifax; one brother, Maurice Walters of East LaHave and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was conducted at Grace Lutheran Church by the pastor, Rev. J.S. Slack on Friday, July 20th, at 2 p.m. The hymns sung were "Beautiful Saviour," "My Faith Looks up to Thee," and "Abide With Me." Pall bearers were Willis Zinck, Arthur Richards, Hilton Croft, and Henry Mullock. Interment took place at Centre Cemetery.

UNKNOWN PAPER - 23 JULY 1924 DOROTHY SUTHERLAND - On Saturday, July 19th, at the residence of her son-in-law, George MacDONALD of Tatamagouche, Mrs. Dorothy SUTHERLAND, widow of George SUTHERLAND, of the Falls, passed peacefully away. Mrs. SUTHERLAND, who was eight-four years of age, had been in failing health for some time. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. McDONALD, with home she has made her home since the death of her husband several years ago, she is survived by four sons, two of whom reside here, James. H., at River John Road, and Hugh at Tatamagouche Mountain. The funeral services on Monday were conducted by Rev. R.L. COFFIN and were largely attended. Interment was at the Bonsetter cemetery, Earltown.
Michael Austin Meisner 1986 Bridgewater Bulletin Michael Austin Meisner, New Canada, passed away August 23, 1986, in the Halifax Infirmary. Born at New Germany, November 11, 1957, he was the son of Edward and Edna (Anthony) Meisner. He was an employee of Silvers' Limited for ten years, until his illness. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 102, and a member of the Barss Corner Baptist Church. He is survived by his common-law wife, Penny Bruhm; his parents; two brothers, Arnold, Barrie, Ontario; Lawrence, Ottawa; one sister, Dianne Fava, Toronto; and a stepsister, Katheleen Flynn, Ellershouse. The body rested at Langille's Funeral Home, New Germany until Tuesday afternoon. The funeral service was held from the United Baptist Church, Barss Corner. THe Rev. Malcolm Beckett officiated. Interment was in the Community Cemetery, Barss Corner.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers and seven sisters. The deceased rested at Langille's Funeral Home, New Germany where funeral service was held Saturday afternoon, August 30, Rev. Randy Crozsman officiating. The organist was John Nause, Upper Northfield. Hymn sung was "Abide With Me" by Krista Mallory. Pallbearers were three of Leo's nephews and three friends, Jacob Penney, Clifford Penney, Elmer Penney, Douglas Morton, Oscar Silver, and Bruce Jodrey. Interment was in Barss Corner Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Ella Conrad Handwritten date: October 13, 1940. Following an illness that covered a period of about three months, death came early on Sunday morning to Ella, widow of Captain Lemuel Conrad of Rose Bay. Mrs. Conrad, who had reached the age of 61 years, was the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Conrad of Rose Bay. Her mother was Miss Conrad of East LaHave. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, a faithful wife, and fond mother of a large family of children and her early passing cast a gloom over the community. She is survived by three daughters, viz.: Mrs. Haliburton Demone (Daisy) of First South; Mrs. Ralph Conrad (Margaret) of Halifax; and Miss Nina, at home; and six sons, Captain Norman and Lawrence of Rose Bay; Leaman of Bayport; Clyde of Lunenburg; Purvis and Albert, at home. She is also survived by one brother, Captain Thomas Conrad. Her husband predeceased her four years ago, succumbing from a heart attack while on board ship at Newfoundland. The funeral was held from her late home and church on Tuesday afternoon. Due to the vacancy caused by the removal of her pastor, Rev. H.N. Lossing, the service was conducted by Rev. C.H. Whitteker of Bridgewater. His text was taken from Rev. 14:13, "And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, write, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them." The hymns sung were "Abide With Me" and "Peace, Perfect Peace." Interment took place beside her late husband and child in the family plot in Harbour View Cemetery at Rose Bay. The pall-bearers were Reuben Oxner, Banford Ritcey, Lennox Conrad, and Charles Conrad.
Charles Joudrey 1911 The Weekly News Maitland News June 1, 1911. Death has again visited the home of Esrom Joudrey and taken another from the family circle. After an illness of only two weeks, his son, Charles, passed away in the fourteenth year of his age. He was a bright, intelligent boy and his father, brothers, and sisters have the sympathy of the whole community. Eight months ago, Stanley, aged five, was taken from them and this makes it very sad indeed for the grief stricken family. The remains were interred on Monday. The Rev. E.A. Harris performed the sad rites.
