Surviving are his wife, the former Jean White; a daughter Betty (Mrs. John Walker), Dartmouth; four sons, Robert, Kansas City; John and Murray, both of Margaretsville; Ellwood, British Columbia; a sister Mrs. Margaret Macdonnell, a brother Ernest, both of Greenwood Village; four grandchildren. Karl Ragnar Vaagen 2001 Halifax Chronicle Herald Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2001. >From the collection of Gwen Christie Karl Ragnar Vaagen, 89, Stillwater Lake, Halifax County, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2001, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Gursteboten, Norway, he was the son of the late Anders Roskar and Kornelia Vaagen. Karl went to sea, as did many Norwegians, at the age of 13, fishing and freighting along the Norwegian coast. During the Second World War, he served his country in the Merchant Marine and survived the explosion of his ship off the coast of Newfoundland. He was sent to Lunenburg for his recovery and later met his wife and settled. For his wartime service, Norway awarded him two medals in 1979. He was employed by Karlsen & Company of Halifax and served as first mate on the Theta and the Martin Karlsen. During his time with Karlsen, he spent his time sealing in the north. Though he spent most of his life in Canada, Norway was always his home. He is survived by two daughters, Helen Sonja Malle and Marie Vaagen; grandchildren, Sonja Vaagen Malle and Stacy Vaagen Malle; sister, Anna Magrete Vaagen. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Monica Mary "Molly" Kennedy. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service 7 p.m. Wednesday in J.A. Snow Funeral Chapel, Windsor Street, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is survived by daughter, Garnice and her husband, J. Douglas Baker, Schnare's Crossing Road, Northwest; son, Lloyd and his wife, Melba, Oakhill; five grandchildren, Kevin and David, Schnare's Crossing; Darryl, Ottawa; Wendy (Kevin) Emino, Wentzell's Lake; Krisanne, Montreal; two step-great grandchildren. A son of Mrs. George Urquhart and the late Mr. Urquhart of New Glasgow, he had worked for 23 years at the New Glasgow Foundry and had been a petty officer, second class, in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Minnie Baigent; four daughters, Mabel (Mrs. Ronald MacEachern), New Glasgow, Joyce (Mrs.F. Weeks), Stellarton; Evelyn (Mrs. R. MacPherson), Trenton; and Shirley, at home; one son, Donald, at home; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. F. Elsie worked on the family farm for most of her life and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg. Elsie was a lady who knew a hard day's work, was always willing to lend a helping hand and to those who knew her, a true friend. She had a strong determination for life and always had a great sense of humour. Aunt Elsie is survived by her niece, Madelyn P. Hebb, Martin's Brook and grandnephews, Kenneth Hebb and Steven Hebb, with whom she resided the last 14 years. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great great-nieces and great great-nephews. Born in Upper Branch, she was the daughter of the late Brunswick and Laurena (Oickle) Rhodenizer. She was a member of All Saints' Lutheran Church, Newcombville. She worked in Caledonia and Middleton. She worked hard with her husband to help lay the foundation for the business which is still thriving today. She was an excellent housewife and also travelled around the area doing hairstyling. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Calvin L. Snyder, Upper Branch; a sister, Emily Turner, Liverpool; two nieces; two nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Audrey Wagner and a nephew. The body rested at R.A. Corkum's Funeral Home, Wileville. Funeral service was held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. in All Saints' Lutheran Church, Newcombville, with Rev. Scott Schellenberger officiating. Pallbearers were James Barkhouse, Larry Greek, Randy Mailman, Charles Mosher, Vonnie Simpson, and Peter Wagner. Passages were read from the Bible by niece, Bev Snyder; fiddle music by Lorimer Higgins and Wayne Hiltz; and vocalist Bruce Oakes sang "How Great Thou Art" and the organist was Marnie Zwicker.

    3. Mrs. Amos Veinot 1946 Bridgewater Bulletin Mrs. Amos Veinot passed away at her home in Dalhousie on Sunday, August 11, following an illness of five weeks. Before her marriage, she was the daughter of Henry and Isabel Veinot Wentzell of Walden, where she was born 75 years ago. She had resided in Dalhousie the past 50 years. Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Lorena (Mrs. Stanley Crossland) who tenderly cared for her mother during her illness; Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Cook), of Sheet Harbour; Mrs. Alice Hiltz, Forties; Charlotte (Mrs. Alex Eisnor), Walden; a sister, Mrs. Harding Dorey, Dayspring; and three brothers, Amos and Albert Wentzell, of Newburne and Fred Wentzell in Maine. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and her pastor, Rev. W. Mink, called to see her during her illness. Funeral took place at Dalhousie at the English Church, Rev. R. Neish officiating. Hymns sung were "The Lord is My Shepherd," "On the Resurrection Morning," and "Rock of Ages," chosen by her grandson, Basil Cook. Pall-bearers were her four grandsons, Gerald Cook, his brother, Basil, Amos Hiltz, and Errol Crossland. She leaves to mourn a sorrowing husband, four daughters, three brothers, and one sister. She was laid to rest beside her son and daughter on August 13.

He later worked on the fleet of National Sea Products Limited. He then sailed on oil tankers for Irving Oil and on various gypsum boats. Prior to retirement, he went back to work with National Sea Products. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23, Lunenburg and was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Rose Bay and an elder of the church. He was a member of the Confidence Lodge 106, Riverport. Surviving are daughter, Linda Lorraine Creaser, Blandford; brother, Lawrence, Hillside Pines Home for Special Care, Bridgewater; half-brother, Harold Mosher, Kingsburg. He is survived by daughters, Heather (Ben) Dean, Dartmouth; Marsha (John) Barkhouse with whom he resided, Marriott's Cove; Carolyn Stevens, also Marriott's Cove; Wanda Hatt (Greg Smith), Fall River; son, Kimber (Tammy), Robinson's Corner; grandchildren, April, Tanya, Brenda, Matthew, Daniel, Amanda, Shawn, Dustin; great-grandson, Jacob; brother, Neil; sister, Annie Barkhouse, both of Marriott's Cove. He was predeceased by his wife, Edna "Nean" (Sawler, Swinemar) in 1981; sons, George (1967) and Gary (1979); brothers, George, Louis, and Fred. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Davis Funeral Home, Chester. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Aenon United Baptist Church, Chester Basin, Rev. Leo Gallant officiating. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Chester Basin. Memorial donations may be made to the VON-Blockhouse Division or charity of one's choice.

Born on Tancook Island, he was the son of the late Clarence B. and Nellie (Baker) Young. He was a retired fisherman and a member of Tancook United Baptist Church. Surviving are son, Terry; daughter, Heather (Lorne) O'Holloran; granddaughters, Laura (Peter) Douglas, Krista, all of Dartmouth; sister, Geraldine McLean, Halifax; nephews, Clarence McLean, Toronto; Tyrone McLean, Moncton. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Joan Cross. Visitation 2-4 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Davis Funeral Home, Chester. Funeral service 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Tancook United Baptist Church, Rev. Barry Dixon officiating. Burial in Tancook Island Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tancook United Baptist Church or 911 Emergency Response Team. Refreshments will be served prior to and after the service in the Recreation Centre. Ferry service will leave Chester at 10:30 a.m. and leave the island at 4:30 p.m.
