OBIT # 8179 - EVENING NEWS - 2 MARCH 1960 Pictou- Robert "Tic" Williams, for many years the scoring wizard of Maritime Hockey, died here Tuesday night of a heart attack. Williams died while on the way to hospital after suffering a seizure while skating. He was 45. A Charlottetown native, Tic played most of his hockey in the Maritimes and was a standout every season he played, capturing several scoring championships. His hockey career ended five years ago. He was playing with Pictou Maripacs at the time and suffered a heart attack in a game at Halifax. On the advice of his doctor, he hung up the skates. He took no active interest in hockey since then but this year decided to do some skating. Last night was the fifth time on skates this season. His colorful career started with Charlottetown Abbies. His sensational play in this league landed him a spot on the Hershey Bears team of the Eastern United States league. From there, Tic went to the Cape Breton league where he performed with Sydney Millionaires. He also performed with Hollinger Greenshirts of the Northern Ontario League and during his top years, turned down offers from National Hockey League teams. Williams came to Pictou in 1941 and ended his career in Pictou County. Although practically all his hockey was played in a Pictou uniform, he had a short fling with New Glasgow. He was one of the all-time greats in Maritime hockey. The competition didn't slow him down in any league and he always finished among the top point-getters. Opposing netminders have stated that when Tic got a breakaway, they might just as well step out of the net, for he was deadly with any shot he let go. He could thread the proverbial needle with his quick backhand. Off the ice, he was a quiet , modest man who never made predictions on games or criticized any player. A gentleman-sportsman at all times, he will long be remembered by hockey fans all over the Maritimes.
- RUFUS SMITH Truro Weekly News. In Memory Of The Late Rufus SMITH Esq., Who Died Suddenly At Onslow, Colchester Co., May 18th, 1901. We but seldom allow memorial verses to appear in the News' as there would be no limit to such a demand upon our space, but considering the terribly sudden and unexpected death of the late Mr. SMITH, and at the urgent request of his invalid sister, we give the following a place in our columns: - Farewell, brother; farewell, brother, Peaceful be thy silent rest. Slumber sweetly God knew best, When to call thee home to rest. Farewell, brother; farewell, brother! We must say our last farewell, Till we met beyond the river, Happy there with thee to dwell. Calm on the bosom of thy God, Fair spirit rest the now; Even while with ours thy footsteps trod His seal was on thy brow. Dust to its narrow house beneath, Soul to its place on high, They that have seen thy look in death No more may fear to die. Beautiful toiler, thy work all done; Beautiful soul, into glory done; Beautiful life with its crown now God giveth thee rest. Beautiful spirit, free from all stain; Ours the sorrow the heart ache, the pain Thine is the glory the infinite gain Thy slumber is sweet. Peaceful by thy silent slumber, Peaceful in thy grave so low, Thou no more will join our number Thou no more our sorrows know. Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, And in heaven with joy to greet thee Where no farewell tears are shed. Tis hard to break the tender cord When love has bound the heart. Tis hard so hard to speak the words We must forever part. Dearest loved one we have laid thee In the peaceful grave's embrace, But thy memory will be cherished Ill we see thy heavenly face. Every year the Father calleth Some loved one to endless rest And the heart tho' filled with anguish Can but cry He knoweth best. But a year not distant cometh When we tread the vast unknown We shall find our distant dear ones Seated round the great white throne. I.C.S.

TRURO DAILY NEWS - LIDA WYLLIE Drowned in the Debert River While Fishing. Miss Lida WYLLIE the Victim, Her Two brothers Were Saved. Special Telephone to 'Daily News.' Folly Village, June 19th, 1901. A sad drowning accident occurred near this place this morning, by which Miss Lida WYLLIE, a daughter of Mr. Robert WYLLIE, 15 years of age, lost her life. Miss WYLLIE, with her two brothers, left here in a carriage on a trout fishing excursion up Debert River. They entered the bed of the river near Peter McNUTT's (...)ase, a short distance from their home, and while driving up the stream, with one wheel of the wagon running in shallow water, it dropped into an unnoticed hole. This precipitated the three occupants of the water, into the river. They all fell into a deep place, with seven feet of water in it. One of the boys had the reins around his neck at the time of the accident, and the other caught hold of the shafts of the wagon; both were dragged out by the horse. Miss WYLLIE was unable to save herself; the half-drowned boys drove rapidly to their home for assistance. It was between 15 minutes and a half hour before any help could reach the girl. It was then too late, all medical skill could do, would not resuscitate the girl, who had been in the water probably 25 minutes. The drowned girl was the granddaughter of the late Rev. W.L. WYLLIE for many years Presbyterian clergyman at Great Village.
