Christian Messenger - Wednesday, 05 December 1860 - Page 390 - Sydney B. Daly - Son of Mr. M.M. Daly, died at Kingston, Aylesford, Nov. 17th, in the 19th year od his age. He came from the United States not long before, and was attacked with diphtheria, while attending on persons sick with that dreadful malady, on the 20th of September. His suffering was great. On visiting him, and perceiving that he seemed unconscious of the need for preparation for eternity, I remarked to him, that I hoped - certainly I had fears - that he had not imbibed any such pernicious idea that the Bible is not true, or that all will be saved. From his silence I naturally inferred that he had. While I was on a remote part of my circuit he became extremely ill. He then stated to Bro. D.M. Welton, of Windsor, that he was once impressed in a time of revival, and united with a religious body; but that some contentions arose and he withdrew, and embraced Universalism. He added, "I find it will do to live by, but not to die by." After a season of deep distress, he trusted that he obtained consolation by relying on the Saviour of sinners. A little before he deceased he requested me to attend his funeral, and preach from the passage that relates the conversion of the malefactor on the cross. The night before his departure he expressed to a young man attending upon him an ardent wish that he should be Christian, and meet him in heaven. The solemn occasion was improved, in accordance with his request, by a discourse addressed to a numerous and attentive congregation from Luke xxiii, 39 - 43. - Communicated by Rev. C. Tupper. OBIT # 8257 - UNKNOWN PAPER - 1958 Stellarton- Dr. and Mrs. B.H. Calkin, aged residents of Acadia Ave., were found dead in their home yesterday afternoon by Rev. M.Y. Fraser, of First Presbyterian Church, their pastor. Both were in their 90's, there was no evidence of foul play, and the coroner, Dr. C.G. Harries, ruled today that no autopsy nor inquest be necessary. The Calkins, who had resided here for over 30 years, had been virtual recluses the past few years as age prevented them from going about much. However, a few friends called regularly, and Rev. Mr. Fraser was a constant visitor, doing many services and acts of kindness for them. Yesterday he became concerned about them, and when he went to call could get no answer. He got one of his neighbours, Sam Russell, to come to the house with him. When they entered, they found both Mr. and Mrs. Calkin dead. Doctors and police were notified in the routine manner, and rumours were spread that there had been foul play, but these were emphatically denied by the authorities today. Death was from natural causes due to age. Dr. Calkin was a native of Kentville, had taken his pre-med course at Acadia University, and obtained his medical degree in the United States. He practiced in Back Bay, Boston, Mass., and for several years served as doctor with the Canadian National Steamships West Indies Line. He also served as a medical officer with the Royal Canadian Navy in the First World War and was a member of the Masonic Order. He is survived by a sister in Kentville and four nephews, the latter are Roy and Garfield Calkin in Kentville, D.L. Calkin in Halifax and Rev. Hugh Blanchard in Wolfville. Mrs. Calkin was the former Margaret Ellen MacKenzie, native of Pictou County and a daughter of the late William MacKenzie, a native of the Isle of Skye, and Isabella Sutherland MacKenzie. Her father at one time was boss carpenter for the Acadia Mines. He built the old home on Acadia Ave., in which Dr. and Mrs. Calkin lived. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dalhousie University and also attended Radcliffe College in the United States. Neighbours say she had also held Master's and Doctor's degrees. After the Boer War, she was sent with other Canadian teachers to South Africa to teach the British school system and was there for two years. Her picture subsequently appeared in "The History of the Boer War." She also taught in Truro, Kentville, and as a substitute in Stellarton. Always interested in youth and education, Mrs. Calkin in former years was known as a compelling speaker on these subjects, and was often heard by church groups and other organizations; at one time she was a member of the Stellarton School Board. She was a past president and honory president of the Stellarton Local Council of Women. After they came to Stellarton over 30 years ago, she was active in church and community work. They were members of First Presbyterian Church and the funeral will be held from there Saturday at 1:30, with interment in Brookside Cemetery.(*From Brookside Cemetery I got his name(Barry H.) Calkin 1865-1958 and also: Margaret Ellen ( MacKenzie ) Calkin- 1868-1958 )
