Donnie went to sea at the age of 12, sailing with Captain Tom Pittman and then with Captain Douglas Himmelman, carrying supplies to the north. Later he went scallop fishing with Clearwater and sailed as mate with Captain Rockwell Weaver on the Lunenburger. At this time Donnie received the captain's license and sailed the Terry Doreen, the Angela Michelle, A.F. Pierce and Ernest E. Pierce. He was then a part owner and captain of the fishing draggers, C&D and Wispering Sea. Born in Wood's Island, he was a son of the late Arthur and Suzanna (Young) Spencer. He served with the Merchant Marines during the Second World War. He later joined the Department of Transportation as a radio operator and was stationed at various locations, the last being the Loran Station at Baccaro from where he retired in 1975. He was warden and treasurer of the Church of the Ascension, Barrington Passage for many years. he was a member of the Barrington Area Lions Club and Royal Canadian Legion, Scotia Branch 25. His hobby was gardening, especially flowers, which he took great pride in. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; son, Sidney (Virginia), Grand Lake; sister, Florence, Washinton, D.C.; sister-in-law, Mary Spencer, Fredericton; grandchildren, Melanie, Kevin; great-granddaughter, Sydney; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers. At his request, cremation has taken place. Gerald spent his early years at sea working on oil tankers on the Great Lakes, before working 36 years with the Department of Highways, retiring in 1990. He was always busy and loved working in the garden and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gloria (Reinhardt); sons, Terry (Sherry), Lower Sackville; Peter (Debbie), Hammond's Plains; Kyle (Kristal), Tantallon; daughters, Barbara Burke, Halifax; Tina (Gerry) Westlake, Beaver Bank; sister, Barbara Schmidt, Kentville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was very active in community and political affairs until his illness five years ago. She is survived by her husband, Stanley "Mac," daughter, Deborah (Duane) Hayes and granddaughter, Kathryn, Victoria; son, J. Laird, Halifax; sister, Pearl Hough, Lincoln; brother, John, Lincoln; sister-in-law, Jean (Macdonald) Shafer, Satellite Beach, Florida; niece, Laurie (Richard) May, Miami; nephew, Douglas (Kay) Macdonald, Satellite Beach. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 12, at 11 a.m. in Zion United Church, Liverpool, Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Burial will take place in Zion United Cemetery, College Street, Liverpool. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the Queens General Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
