A document that I have says that my uncle and I suspect my dad Wilbert James Launey were conditionally baptized at St. Joseph's church L.Bras d'Or in 1944. Would this type of record have any information about my grandparents? Has anyone ever heard of a Mrs. Albert Leblanc of Havre Boucher? She is described as the grandmother of my dad, aunt, and uncle in the same Little Flower Orphanage document. I have been told that she later changed her name to White and that her first name is Annie possible second names are Marie and Harriet or Henriette. Her maiden name was Fougere. I have been told that she was born and married to a Francis Charles or Charles Francis Launey in Grande Etang, Nova Scotia (her first husband). Her father's name could have been Maurice or Morris Fougere. Her mother's name could have been Mary but I am not sure. I have been told that her brothers and sisters were Alfredia (married a Babineau, George Fougere, Dolly (married a Bond), Bertha (married a Fraser), Excilda (no spouse name given), Peter Fougere and Simon Fougere. I don't know what year she was born but I suspect that if she was between the ages of 16 - 18 at the time that she had her first child that she would ! have been born around 1885. It is possible that Charles Francis Launey originated from France or Belgium and moved between Louisiana and Nova Scotia. If this is true information than they were possibly married around the early 1900 - 1902 time period. Does anyone know how I would research their marriage record? What Catholic Church would she have been baptized in if she was from Grande Etang? Her children from Chaz (Charles Francis Launey) were Lena Excilda - Born 1907, Annie Violet (Ninnie) 1916, George Francis, 1920 (nicknamed Bikey), Helen, 1924, and Francis Launey died January 22, 1918 in the Allan Mine Explosion in Stellerton, Nova Scotia. Possibly born in 1903. I have been told that they traveled to France and/or Belgium and than returned to Nova Scotia when Lena was about 11 years of age. Does anyone know what port that they would have most likely landed in when they returned? I have serious doubts about the return date that I have been given because it is 19! 18 and someone in the family died in the mine explosion in January of 1918. I suspect that they returned to Canada sometime before 1918. I have been told that the family was living on Matilda Street in South Bar in 1927. The problem is that the family could have been Launey, Leblanc, or Fougere as I do not know when my great-grandmother remarried and I don't know when my grandfather or when my great great grandparents died. I do know that by June of 1941 my great grandmother is described as Mrs. Albert Leblanc of Harve Boucher. I do not know when they changed their name to White or if it was even a legal change of name. Has anyone ever heard of a Annie Violet Launey - nicknamed Ninnie. She lived in Whitney Pier and would have been born about 1916. I have been told that she was living with a man named Alex or Alec Muise (Meuse) in Whitney Pier. I have heard that he possibly originated from New Waterford. She was approximately 25 years of age when her children were taken from her and they were placed in Little Flower and she was put in the Cape Breton Hospital? I do not know what happened to her after she entered the hospital? Is there an information source to research the names of the miners and/or their families that worked in the Allan Mine? I have a pay stub for Francis Launey for one pay period during 1918 - it records his pay as being $9.00 with no deductions. Is this the average pay for a miner during this time period? I do not know if this pay stub belongs to my great grandfather or my great uncle and I would like to substantiate the information if I can. If one of them was working in the Allan Mine what town would they have been living in during that time period? I have also been told that they were associated somehow with a lighthouse. What I am not sure of is if it was the Fougere's or the Launey's that were caretakers of a Lighthouse and I am not sure if it would have been Harve Boucher or another place. Is there any records of Lighthouse keepers in Cape Breton? The place names that have been associated with my family seem to be Grand Etang, Harve Boucher, Allan Mine (not sure of nearest town), Sydney, Whitney Pier, Antigonish, South Bar, and Jarvis Island. My dad used to tell me that my great grandmother lived on a little Island and that you could only get to it when the tide was running a certain way or something like that. Unfortunately my father has passed away and I can not ask him about any of the things that he said to me as I was growing up. Does anyone know if there is a Family History Centre in Victoria BC? I saw an e-mail giving the address for the one in Nova Scotia but I have never seen anything for Victoria. If anyone has any information about any of the people that I have listed or if anyone can answer any of the questions that I have asked please reply to me. I live in Victoria, BC and I have been trying very hard to find my father's family. Over the years I have kept the little tidbits of information that I have been told in hopes that something would eventually lead to more answers. I have a copy of my dad's birth and death certificate but I can not apply for my grandparents certificates until I at least get a birth date and birth place for them. I have continuously watched the messages that are passed between the members of the list and I have learned little bits and pieces of information. I have also sent a letter to the Deputy Minister of Community Services in Nova Scotia under the Freedom of Information Act requesting more information about my family as my father was never adopted by anyone and the Adoption Act does not apply to him. It saddens me that there is a p! ossibility that both of my grandparents could be alive without me even knowing it. When my dad, uncle, and aunt finally found each other it turned out that while they were growing up that they were actually living very close to each other geographically and didn't even know it. I would also like the list to know that I have started a family tree at http://www.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/my_main.cgi I will be adding to it as I get more dates, names, and information. Thank you, Donna Launay.
