Good morning, I'd like to ask if anyone is researching LEWIS children who arrived in Nova Scotia .... as "British Home Children." According to the records at the web site for the National Archives of Canada, over ..220 .. of the Home Children .. had the surname, LEWIS. And, I think about 2 dozen of them .. were sent to Halifax. My great-grandfather, John "Stanley" Lewis, was born in Liverpool, England, in 1859. In 1873, he was sent to the Liverpool Sheltering Home. And, in 1874, he was shipped to Halifax, NS. ... I believe he might have had an older sister, Jane Lewis, come over to Halifax .. in the late 1860's. She married a Robert Thompson. On the same ship with my great-grandfather were 3 Lewis girls: Josephine, also 14 ... and then Elizabeth, 9, and Mary, 7. I have not been able to find any information on them, so I do not know if they were related. That same summer (1874) .. five CORKILL siblings .. who grew up in Liverpool, England,* were shipped to Halifax, NS. The oldest was Mary Elizabeth .. and she married "Stanley" Lewis in Truro, NS, in 1879. In 1881, "Stanley" and Mary migrated to Boston, MA. They had 13 children there. I have found out that Julia Corkill became Mrs. Julia McNUTT, and Esther Corkill became Mrs. Esther COFFIN. Two much younger brothers were John, 5, and Robert, 3. In his 30's, John married a Miss CHISHOLM. I have not found out what happened to Robert, but I know his surname became CORKHILL, and he was still in the FERGUSON home at Age 10. (Each one of the children arriving in the 1870's .. went to live in different ..homes.. in NS.) *Evan Corkill, the father, was originally from the Isle of Man. .... I am also descended from four RICE cousins who migrated to Nova Scotia in the 1790's. They settled in Digby. But, right around 1800, several of the families moved across the water into Lubec and Eastport, ME. That's where my great-great-grandfather, Charles Wellington Rice, was born around 1850. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~britishhomechildren/
