I noticed that there was a William Smith in the 1871 census, at Westport (Brier Island), Digby County. This William, however, was age 47, with wife, Sarah, and two children - Frederic and Sophia. Also found a Captain William Smith, born Digby, age 40 in 1872, who was captain of a large ship, EDITH TROOP, owned by the St. John Troop families.First Mate on this vessel was John A. Smith, of Westport. Realize that the dates don't match for your William Smith, but all that I could find. Best Regards, John
