Doane was the captain of a ship that was lost at sea that year and that the crew was never found. I have found another article (source unknown) talking about the incident. See below. Doane is my last name so I am not sure where the alternate spelling came from. And in the other article the ship's name is incorrectly spelled Simmonds.... Captain J.W Doane of the schooner Daniel Simmonds and his crew were all lost when the vessel foundered in a storm on 27 November 1898. The vessel sailed from Gloucester 25 November and was last seen 50 miles from Cape Ann. The Daniel Simmonds was 70 tons register, built at Essex, MA. in 1854 and owned by Isaac Hutchison of Brighton.
