This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lewis, Corkill Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SOC.2ACE/813.2 Message Board Post: My great-grandfather was a "Home Child," arriving in Halifax, NS, in 1874 .. as a 14-year-old. ... In 1879 in Truro, he married another "Home Child," Mary Corkill, the same age .. both from Liverpool, England. On the marriage certificate, the parents were listed as John and Isabel Lewis of Liverpool, England. Because John and Isabel married in 1841, and their son, John, wasn't born until 1859, my suspicion is that there ..should be .. many more children in that family. The youngest? was reportedly born in 1864. I have been learning about the "Home Children" since June 2000, and know that over 220 of them had the surname, LEWIS. This past winter I discovered that a Jane Lewis probably arrived in Halifax, NS, in the 1860's. She married in Truro in 1870. My suspicion is that Jane was the older sister to John. On the same ship with my great-grandfather were 3 Lewis girls, Josephine, Elizabeth, and Mary ... I have not been able to find ..any.. information on them, so I cannot determine whether they were related to John. The "Home Children" were sent to Canada ... from ~1860 to ~1930 ... However, I have found out that "young adults" came over on their own ... before that ... So, if anyone is looking for ... people in that timeframe, please look at the various web sites .. on the "Home Children" or "British Home Children."
