Family legend says that he came south from Nova Scotia to Maine after a dispute with family members over his father's estate. The earliest record of him I have found is his marriage in late 1789 to a Sarah Stinchfield (marriage was recorded in Town of Winthrop, Lincoln Cty., Maine)

William Smith (b abt 1776) who married Hannah Tucker (b abt 1776) appears to be the earliest known ancestor of this family, but presumably his family (as in his parents) came to Digby or thereabouts in the 1780s from New England or the Mid-Atlantic (the Tuckers had come from Massachusetts). One of William and Hannah's children was Nany Smith (b abt 1822) who married Joseph Titus.
