To all -- Gordon's column is being forwarded as he requests] This column is packed with items re our recent census and YES, if it is still on the buffet or table, call the phone number immediately. There is no fine for late filing of a census form -- but --- read the information in Gordon's column. Hello! I am wondering if anyone might have a lead about the parentage of Mary "Polly" Lewis, born about 1776-78 (apparently) in Digby County, Nova Scotia. She married Samuel Thurber (s/o Borden Thurber and Sarah Sabin). A single entry on rootsweb suggests she was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Lemmon, but it is the sole entry that indicates who her parents may be, and there is no sourcing. Thanks for any information you might have. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
To all:- I am forwarding the usual information-filled column by Gordon Watts. There is so much going on -- it is nice to pack it into one column. Above all -- Remember the YES reply to Question 53 on the long census forms and Question #8 on the short form. It is nice to see the complete date of birth which is missing from the 1911 -- I have transcribed many pages so know only month, year and age was given. Muriel M. I'm wondering if anyone has information on the parents of Mary Lewis (b abt 1776 in Nova Scotia) who married Samuel Thurber on 20 Mar 1797 in Digby, Nova Scotia, and died apparently in 1847. A single entry on rootsweb suggests her parents were Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Lemmon, but I have no idea if this information is accurate.
Gail, From what I have in MY files, I'd suspect Etta Matthews is Henrietta Daley, sister to Minetta "Nettie" Daley. Both appear as daughters of John Daley (b. 04-Apr-1830) and his wife, Eliza, b. 27-Aug-1838. If so, that "Etta" would have been born @1869, with Nettie born @1867. Henrietta is still "at home" in 1891 Digby Co Census, but does not appear with family in 1901. I suspect she would have married Mr. Mathews/Matthews some time between those census years, but I found no such person in 1901 Canada Census. Will check US census records, just in case they migrated south of the border. :-) Would surely be interested in a scan of the photo, as there are Handspiker ties to one or more of these women. I have the same record of Elmira ' s marriage ( to Edward L. I am hoping to determine the names of the parents of Elisha Titus and his wife Mary of Digby County Nova Scotia. I don't have their exact dates of birth, but their daughter Elmira Titus was married on July 29, 1879 to Edward Leonard Thurber in Digby County, and that Elmira was the daughter of Elisha and Mary Titus (suggesting Elisha and Mary were likely born in the 1820s or 1830s - also I imagine in Digby County). I had entered in my notes that Elmira was the daughter of Losee Titus and Mary D'arcy from an internet entry, and somehow along the way that note became something like fact. I just discovered that marriage record for Edward and Elmira Thurber though which suggests rather strongly that Losee and Mary Titus were not in fact Elmira's parents. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.
----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon A. Watts" <gordon_watts@telus.net> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 2:06 PM Subject: Census 2006 -- Lockheed-Martin and confidentiality Greetings All Over the past few weeks I have been made aware of a group who have been actively campaigning to have people hinder, or cripple the upcoming Canadian Census. I have been reluctant to make mention of them at all, hoping they would just 'go away', and I will not mention who they are because I do not wish to give any indication I believe them to be credible. Let it suffice to say that it would appear they are well funded, and well organized. In my opinion however, they are misguided and misinformed regarding the realities of how the Census is being conducted. They do not advocate outright refusal to respond to the Census, but offer a number of suggestions regarding ways to hinder the process, and to skew the resultant data. To follow these suggestions would, in my opinion, be dangerous and detrimental to the entire process and the reasons for it. These people put forth the fact that Statistics Canada has contracted out to the Canadian subsidiary of Lockheed-Martin for software, and fear that having done so makes our Census data subject to export to the United States under legislation enacted there after 9-11, as reasons to not fully cooperate in our upcoming Census. This is not a new issue. In fact, to my knowledge it has been around since early 2004, when Statistics Canada conducted a test Census in preparation for Census 2006. It is an issue that has been dealt with in Parliament at least twice that I am aware of. It is an issue that should have been put to rest long ago. Statistics Canada has taken a number of steps to ensure that confidentiality of Census is maintained, and that NO information provided to Census can be exported to the United States or any other country. Those steps include the following: ** Only Statistics Canada staff handle completed questionnaires and process confidential data. All questionnaires and data are processed in Canada. ** The systems and networks used to collect and process confidential data are not connected to any external networks, and are physically isolated from the outside. ** No contract staff is ever in possession of confidential data, and it is physically impossible for any outside contractor to obtain possession of census data or to transmit them outside the Agency. ** Everyone working on the census is sworn in under the Statistics Act, and subject to the provisions and penalties of the Statistics Act (including imprisonment of up to six months) if they breach confidentiality. I urge everyone to cooperate fully, and to honestly complete the Census 2006 questionnaires. It is to your advantage to do so. Ensure your place in the history of Canada. On Census Day 16 May 2006, answer YES to allow your information to be made available to your descendants in 2098. As everyone you know to do so as well. Gordon A.
