    1. Re: [CAN-NS-DIGBY] Descendants of Rachael McAlpine and StephenSteele
    2. Hello Luella - I would very much like a look up if it is not too much trouble. Until Michael Christie and I started on our book our Baptist histrians did not know what happened to Steele. I bought my copy of Wilson in Digby, but it suffers from lack of an index - even the one they have of the names that are found there leaves a bit to be desired. Our book, by the way, is in the hands of the Convention Historical Committee. We hope they will publish it eventually - time will tell. We have now moved on to the Free Baptists of New Brunswick, and the influence of groups in New England on our Atlantic Free Baptists. 3. Looking at the index to the Digby Couroer---1896- 1908 I see a death for Strphen Steele for 27 Mar. 1903 [ date it appeared] Would this be the right one and do you want a look up Luella

    3. On Morgan Lewis, I have census reports for 1871 and 1881. I do not know when he died, or where he was born. I have a list of his children, but not his parents. I have found a John Morgan Lewis but this is not the same person. Morgan might even be a middle name. By 1881 he was a widower and his son Burton was living with him. Morgan was married to Sarah Chute b. 1821 from Clements, Annapolis, NS married around 1849. There were 7 children one died at 1 year or so. Every database I have seen on rootsweb shows birthdate of Burton at 1864, but both census reports would make him born 1859. Everybody shows a Clarence born in 1859 and died 1860 in Richmond County. Morgan has me puzzled. It may be that he isn't even from Nova Scotia originally. My Sabeans came originally from Maine and Massachussetts. Alan Lewis Portland, OR PS Besides Lewis, Sabean and Chute, I also have Mullen, Grant, Gilliland, Marshall, Charlton in my lines placed in Nova Scotia. 1. Re: [CAN-NS-DIGBY] Descendants of Rachael McAlpine and Stephen Steele
    2. Hello Mia - I don't have the information you are looking for, but I am interested in Stephen Steele. He was ordained by the Free Christian Baptists about 1840 on Digby Neck as pastor of a FCB Church in that area. Ten years later he joined the Church of Christ and according to Wilson's History of Digby County he was baptised over again - this time presumably for the remission of sins. (Wilson, page 252-253) (See also page 419-420) Steele then became an Elder of the Church of Christ in Southville near Weymouth, where he served for the next fifty years. If you have any information about Elder Steele or his descendants I would be interested in it. 3. There is a brief mention of Stephen Steele in this book on line about the Disciples of Nova Scotia. http://www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/texts/rbutchart/dcc/DCC23.HTM#Sec17 Scroll down to Southville church section. My interest was primarily the South Range section, but have read with interest the remaining sections. The book is archived on http://www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/index.html which is hosted by the University of Newfoundland. Hans has a number of pages on Newfoundland in another area of the website. One of the names I have been looking for is a Morgan Lewis who may have remained a baptist. His daughter married into the family after they converted from the Baptists. My greatgrandfather is Hiram Sabean. He married Sarah Isabell Lewis. They then moved to Washington state after the birth of several children. I found this book trying to locate my ancestors the Sabean and Lewis family in Nova Scotia. My ancestor (Benjamin Sabean) was a deacon and later an elder at the South Range church in Digby. His father was one of the founding members of the Baptist Church of Digby, which the reference I have references Sissiboo. There was a mention of this along with some obits in a publication called the Christian Messenger. The librarian at Abilene Christian University in Texas has looked at their archives for both the American and British Christian Messenger which were prominent in Churches of Christ/Christian Church circles but could find no obits in referenced issues and the search involved several years either side of the dates given. It may be that this publication was perhaps a Baptist publication in Canada. 3. These were my grandparents married May 13, 1894 in Middle LaHave, NS. James William Lohnes and MaryEtta Schmeiser. I have traced their genealogy back into the 1500s. But I still have questions about my grandparents. James was a Sea Captain running his own freight ship between NS and countries south. Upon retiring in 1911 he moved his family from Lunenburg County to Digby County where he bought a farm (Carols Corners..I have a picture of the farm house). But he died in 1912 and his wife shortly after leaving behind 5 children from approximate ages of 9 to 17. One was my mother Laura. Finally, my questions. What was the name of his ship and what kind was it? And more important what happened to those children's lives for the next few years? The story that has been passed down is that some were put in orphanages or indentured by a guardian who sold off all their property and took off with the proceeds. My mother once told me they were left with nothing but their clothes. I do have all their children's information after they got married but not those years as children. My parents were Laura Greta Lohnes and Arthur St.Clair Walker of Western Shore. Vernice Walker Lohnes Myers, Cody, Wyoming vwm@vcn.com
