Paula, Stailing was definitely a name in Digby County. If I remember correctly they ran the stage coach line down Digby Neck. I'll see what I can find for you in the county history. To all:- A very special and important message is printed below, with hope for the future of the Post-1901 Census. In the meantime, visit http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm -- we need these! Muriel M. Davidson, Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee ------------------------------------------------------- Greetings All. MP Murray Calder, our champion in the House of Commons, recently had his name drawn in the Private Members Bill Lottery. While he has more than one Private Member Bill in the works he has chosen Bill C-312 as the one to put forth. C-312 is identical to Senator Milne's Bill S-12 currently under review by the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. If passed into law these Bills would give us the access to Historical Census Records that we seek. It is expected that the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs will likely meet on 21 November 2001. It is this Committee that will determine whether or not Bill C-312 will be deemed votable. Murray will make a presentation to argue that it should be votable. In it he will no doubt point to the enormous interest in this issue as expressed in the tens of thousands who have signed petitions. It is important to understand that the committee doesn't necessarily look at the merits of the bill -- only whether it should be votable. In other words, a committee member may be opposed to it, but still feel it should come to a vote. They will choose 5 bills from the 15 selected in the recent draw to become votable. The process is explained at this site: (be sure to include the full URL) www.parl.gc.ca/information/about/process/house/precis/chap15-e.htm If all goes well, the bill could come up in the House as early as December 11th. If deemed votable and passed at this stage, Bill C-312 would proceed to review by a Committee of the House. I copy below a list of the members of the committee and their email addresses. Perhaps they would appreciate some brief notes advising them of them of the importance of Census records to our research. Advise them that seek their positive vote in making Bill C-312 votable. Keep your messages polite and to the point. As a point of interest, checking the MP's Scoreboard for the members of this committee there are 8 gold ticks of support, 4 non-committal fences, three question marks indicating no response, and 1 red X of opposition. Dear Winnifred: Afraid this will not be much help but maybe you will either confirm or deny a connection at some poit in time. Regards, Carol Vater [email protected] Hamiltons in lower Digby county were plentiful in that time period. I have a Henry Hamilton, but no further generations or spouse for him. Born 1805, he would be abt 20 in 1825, close to your man for a possible marriage date around 1820??? His ancestors were not as you quote, so doubt it is the same one, but for what it is worth: Descendants of Daniel Hamilton 1st (his father came from Chatham, Mass. via Shelburne, NS to Argyle region. I know that because Dan 2nd married Bridget Gavel who was from my grandmother's family line. Henry must have been his twin, as they have the same birthdate.) 1. Daniel Hamilton3 1st (Samuel2 Hamilton, Thomas1) He married Penelope "Nellie" Morton December 25, 1794. Children of Daniel 1st and Penelope Morton are: 2 i. Wells4 Hamilton, born August 01, 1796. 3 ii. David Hamilton, born September 24, 1798. 4 iii. Tamsy Hamilton, born August 16, 1800. 5 iv. Job Hamilton, born October 21, 1802. 6 v. Daniel Hamilton 2nd, born November 23, 1805; died August 27, 1866. He married Bridget Gavel December 24, 1829; born March 07, 1808; died September 11, 1903. 7 vi. Henry Hamilton, born November 23, 1805. 8 vii. Penelope Hamilton, born January 29, 1808. 9 viii. John Hamilton, born January 31, 1811. 10 ix. James Hamilton, born September 16, 1812. 11 x. Hi John, I remembered seeing that name, so thought I'd see what I could find. Henry Stenderson not in the 1861 census at Freeport. In 1871, there is a William Stenderson, age 23, seaman, single, living with the Augustus Haines family. In the Freeport Baptist Church records (about 1882), members - Henry Stenderson, Almira Stenderson. In the Birth Records : Ada Bell Stenderson, b. 16 Aug 1873, to Henry Stenderson and Almira Plumb, married 1873, at Freeport. From book " Glimpes of the Past from Long and Brier Islands " by Donald Outhouse (1998), this ( from newspaper " Yarmouth Light ") : Dec. 2, 1890 - " Miss Nellie Thurber and Mrs. Henry Stenderson came home on the 21st. by S. S. Alpha, from Lynn, Mass." In 1861 Census at Freeport : John C. Plumb, total family of six, 2 males, 4 females. In 1871 Census at Freeport : John Plumb, age 50, b. Hi Cousin, I have always thought that Shippey Lent Jr. lived on Crocker's Hill in Freeport. Abraham Lent and William Lent appear to have lived "around the Cove" near the site of the wharf of Esrom Thurber's, who was , I believe, related (Esrom's middle name was Lent). The wharf, and large store (now gone), were owned by William Lent. If you have a good, clear, A. F. CHURCH map (and a strong magnifying glass), you will see an S. Lent on Crocker's Hill, just above Lover's Lane, on the right (leaving Freeport). Where are the original A.F. Church maps that were at Freeport ? When I was growing up there were two or three in the villiage, one owned by the Baptist Church. I wouldn't try to follow the 1871 Census, as it doesn't seem to follow along in order - seems to skip around when matched with other sources. Best I can do cuz, always open to corrections.
