Was Joseph in Houlton, Maine, with his uncle David, or are you saying that David and Rachel were his parents ? I have no proof either way that Samuel Tidd Jr. was his father. Also, do you think this David Andrew Tidd may have died young, and perhaps they named their second child David Andrew ? (it was a common practice to do this). I ask this because the Andrew David/David Andrew in the 1871 census was born 1838. He married Sarah A. Stanton in 1855, at little River (source- Digby County Births). I have the children of Joseph and Priscilla thus : -- (1) Andrew D. b. 1838 ; (2) Catherine b. 1839, md . Porterfield Bunker (3) William B., b.1841 md. Emily Hannah Prime - my great -grandparents (4) Ensley b.1844, md. Mary Morehouse ; (5) James - never md. (6) Chloe md. Newton Guthrie, of Grand Manan (7) Harriet md. Nelson Guthrie, of Grand Manan ; (8) Aremina md. Albion Huntly, of Grand Manan, on 15 Aug 1874. (9) Rachel b. 1854, md Benjamin Prime Jr., of Freeport. (10) Joseph Jr. b. 1857 md. Melissa Stanton ; (11) Laleah b. 1860 md. Marris McCullough. Emily Hannah Prime and Benjamin Prime Jr. were sister and brother, children of Benjamin Prime Sr. and Mary Ann Hersey of Freeport. Hi all Well the big update is up but the conversion process wasn't easy, I thought I could manually fix the columns so they would line up but some times it didn't work. So I am looking for volunteers to retype each page into a spreadsheet program that I will then convert to a web page. Let me know and I will reserve a page for you. If any one has any ideas how to fix the columns email me. Digby Census Index was transcribed and contributed by Charlotte Vardy. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nsdigby/census/index/codes.htm Our thanks goes out to Charlotte Nichols-Vardy [email protected] She indexed the 1871, 1881, 1891 Digby census at home (1991-1994) from a microfilm reader during the winter months - she got so tired of going through all that microfilm to do lookups for everyone, so she indexed it. 11 files with the alphabet A-Z; a total of 537 pages plus 278 more pages of French surnames. Charlotte has donated the Digby County census index to the Digby Genweb so everyone can enjoy her hard work. If you have any doubts about the Census Index please contact the Admiral Digby Museum http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/admuseum/ and hire a researcher to confirm the data from the original census. They had a son they named David Andrew who was born in Houlton Maine 26 Nov. 1833 he was about 3 years old when they came back to Nova Scotia. Joseph bought land from William Johnson who had purchased it from David and Rachel before they went to Maine. As near as I can determine the land was at Whale Cove and part of the old Land Grant to the heirs of Samuel Tidd. Hoping to get some "feed-back" Wally

Also in 1806 David Tidd married John's daughter Rachel Caldwell, their first born was John Caldwell Tidd who grew up in the "Tiddville" area and married Rachel Cossaboom. Rachel (Caldwell) Tidd died in the early 1820s and David remarried and moved to Hodgdon Maine, as did John Caldwell Tidd, and Joseph, who later returned. There are many descendants of John Caldwell, through his grandson over in the Houlton area of Maine and beyond.

The Loyalists on the PRINCE OF WALES were picked up by the JOSEPH, Capt. Jonathon Walton, and brought to Digby. John Caldwell appears to have been a widower, as on the Muster Rolls at Digby, he is shown with 3 children, no spouse. On 20 Dec 1789, he married Nancy VanVelsor, of Sandy Cove (trinity Parish Church Records, Digby), He was a grantee at Petite Passage (now Tiverton), Digby County, in 1788, where he received 190 acres. He was also included in the grant of Long Island (Freeport& Central Grove) where he received 250 acres in the Central Grove area. He later had land at East Ferry, Sandy Cove, Cherry Valley (near Little River), and finally settled at Caldwell's Cove, near Culloden, Digby County. There are more records of this family , in County History, other books, County records, etc. - Hope this helps, John Thurber

My great-great-grandfather was Charles Wellington Rice who was born in Lubec, ME, around 1850. He seems to have been the youngest of 10 children of Daniel and Lucy (McDaniel) Rice of Lubec. But, Daniel's father was born right around 1800 in either Digby, NS, or Lubec, ME, as that is the year several RICE families moved .. over the water. The history of these families is that ... four RICE cousins migrated from Marlborough, MA, to Nova Scotia .. during the second half of the 1700's. Many of them settled in Digby, NS. A member of the Rice Family Association created a web site which might be very helpful to you. I think if you put "Four Nova Scotia Families" into a search, you will find this web site. If you can't locate it, let me know, and I will get the URL for you. I think (from memory) we are descended from Ashbel Rice .. and most of the early families were descended from the patriarch ... Deacond Edmund Rice .. of 1600's Salem?, MA.
