    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SOC.2ACE/929.1 Message Board Post: Hi John, I read with great interest your post on the Specht origins, as this family has been part of my recent discussions with other researchers .Specht and Thurber research shows the following : Christopher Anthony Specht,(b.1796), married Margaret Sophia Thurber(1808-1846),at Weymouth N.S., in 1828. They had 10 children. Margaret Sophia was the daughter of Samuel Thurber and Mary "Polly" Lewis.I have been trying to confirm the name Margaret Sophia, as some Thurber researchers have her listed as two persons - Margaret and Sophia. Also I have been trying to confirm the marriage and dates with a primary source -- nothing yet, unfortunately. There are 3 marriages, of the children of Anthony Specht, in the Digby History, page 362 : (1) - Elizabeth C. Specht to James Licet, on 3 Nov. 1802. (2) - William Specht to Hannah Licet, on 5 Jan 1807. (3) - Hannah Specht to William Licet, on 6 Jan 1807. A daughter of Hannah and William Licet, Fanny, married James Thurber, a brother of Margaret Sophia (above). I have a map of the early grants at St. Mary's Bay (Brighton/Barton area) - Index Sheet # 13, which shows the lots owned by Christopher Specht ( I suspect son of Anthony), at Specht Cove (Lots 44 and 45), in Barton. (The brook that ran through his lot, is also called Specht Brook). Anthony Specht's lot is not far away, at lot # 49. I will send a copy to you , off -list, if you are interested. Also I would like to discuss another of the Hessians, Christian Klingshoer, who may turn out to be my gggg-grandfather. But more on that later. Best Regards, John Thurber

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SPECHT, SPEICHT, SPULIT. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SOC.2ACE/929 Message Board Post: While visiting Digby some years back, I bought a 1:50 000 topographical map and found marked on it Spechts Cove, situated in the St.Marys Bay near the village of Barton, appr, 8 miles east of Digby, N.S. I take it that it got its name from an early settler of the area, and checking my military files of Hessian soldiers, I found that an Ensign with the Brunswick troops, Johann Julius Anton SPECHT did come to Digby in 1783 and brought with him a wife and a child over 10 years. In the book by Isaiah Wilson, published by Mika Publishing, titled "County of Digby, Nova Scotia", he lists on page 74: Muster Roll for Digby County, discharged officers and privates, 18.July 1784: Anthony SPEICHT. The Public Archives (PANS) in file RG1, Vol.376, page 17, has this: SPULIT, Anton, Hessian officer,, mustered at Digby, N.S. in 1784, with a wife and a child.- Having done my research for this Nova Scotia settler, I found his name in the Brunswick files as originally stated as Julius SPECHT, born in Braunschweig/Germany, the name Spulit is not found, and has been misread by previous researchers. After having found Spechts Cove, I am sure that was the name he was known by. I posted this to this Message Board, because I could not find any reference to this early settler, but noticed the name in an obituary in the late 1800's. I am sure there are many descendants around. They had 11 children, one of which was Bland Smalle born June 5, 1858 in Digby, Nova Scotia. I am looking for any family information. Bland married Delitha Higgins my g-grandmother. Few details are known about Delitha's beginnings. She supposedly was a Cherokee Indian. Her parents were killed when she was small and she was adopted by a preacher on the reservation. His name was Higgins. We don't have a first name for him or what his wife's name was. I am hoping that possibly one of Bland's siblings descendants knows information about Delitha.

    1. [CAN-NS-DIGBY] Post 1901 Census - Writing letters
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- We MUST, at present, follow requests as received -- write to our own MP or Senator -- above all help both Murray Calder and Senator Lorna Milne with many signatures on petitions. Muriel M. Davidson [email protected] http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm ----------------------------------------------------- Greetings All. Our past efforts in encouraging all to write letters and email to all MPs and Senators have been tremendously successful, and we thank all that done so. We have had indications that in the offices of many of our elected and appointed representatives, messages regarding support for access to Historic Census Records far outnumber messages received on any other subject. From this we can safely assume that all Members of Parliament and Senators are now most certainly aware of our feelings on this subject. We have also had indications that, with a new Minister of Industry, some things are once again happening behind the scenes. As such it is perhaps time now for a slight change in tactics to allow those working on our behalf the opportunity to see some results from their efforts. We still encourage all to write letters to their own Member of Parliament, to those Senators that represent the area in which they live, and of course the applicable Ministers. We would ask, however, for the time being at least, you restrict your letters to your own representatives, and do not send blanket letters and email to all of them. A few word about your letters and email. We have been advised that in some cases, messages to our representatives have crossed the boundary from encouraging them to support our point of view, to harassment and demands that they do so. This kind of message only serves to get their back up and even if they were inclined to see things our way, they get angry and say "To h*** with them!" I have been copied on some letters, that had they been directed to me, would have caused this reaction from myself. Our purpose in writing is to get our representatives to join in our effort, not to antagonize or annoy them. In that regard we should keep the following in mind: * Be polite and respectful in your comments. * If your purpose in writing is to inform, keep your comments factual. * If your purpose is to request their support -- request it -- don't demand it. * Above all, do not let your message be a personal attack on any individual because they might have a different point of view than you do. I repeat -- be polite and respectful. In this age of electronic communication it is easy to zip off an email and send it to many people at the same time. I confess to being guilty of frequently doing this myself. We have been reminded lately, however, that many of our representatives would put more stock in, and more readily pay attention to, an individual letter from a constituent (particularly a hand written one) than they would to 100 email from non-constituents. With this in mind we suggest for the time being, rather than using email you send personal letters via Canada Post. If mailed in Canada there is no postage required to send a letter or parcel to any Member of Parliament or Senator. If your handwriting is legible (mine isn't) use pen and ink to write it. If your handwriting is not legible by all means use your typewriter or word processor to print it out before mailing - [add signature in handwriting, please - MMD]. If you receive a response that shows a different position than those shown on the MP or Senator Scoreboards, please forward a copy to me so that their position can be brought up to date. Thank you all for your support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
