In 1879 in Truro, he married another "Home Child," Mary Corkill, the same age .. both from Liverpool, England. On the marriage certificate, the parents were listed as John and Isabel Lewis of Liverpool, England. Because John and Isabel married in 1841, and their son, John, wasn't born until 1859, my suspicion is that there ..should be .. many more children in that family. The youngest? was reportedly born in 1864. I have been learning about the "Home Children" since June 2000, and know that over 220 of them had the surname, LEWIS. This past winter I discovered that a Jane Lewis probably arrived in Halifax, NS, in the 1860's. She married in Truro in 1870. My suspicion is that Jane was the older sister to John. On the same ship with my great-grandfather were 3 Lewis girls, Josephine, Elizabeth, and Mary ... I have not been able to find ..any.. information on them, so I cannot determine whether they were related to John. The "Home Children" were sent to Canada ... from ~1860 to ~1930 ... However, I have found out that "young adults" came over on their own ... before that ... So, if anyone is looking for ... people in that timeframe, please look at the various web sites .. on the "Home Children" or "British Home Children."

I've written to Winfred .. separately.. but I thought I would post the answer to her question here ..... I have summarized my RICE information this week, and have come to find out that an Ashabel and Percissa "Persis" RICE migrated from Marlborough, MA, to Nova Scotia .. right around 1782. (She the former Percissa KNIGHT) ... They had their first child in Marlborough and the rest were born, probably in Digby, NS. Their children were: Mary Rice, b~1780 Rufus Rice, b~1783 Ruth Rice, b~1784 Lucy Rice, b~1788 Ebenezer Rice, b~1793 Jesse Rice, b~1796 Ashabel Rice, b~1803 Daniel Rice??, b~1804 daughter Rice??, b~1806 I am trying to determine if Daniel Rice, b1804, probably in Digby, NS, is the son of Ashabel Rice ...... or if Daniel Rice, b1804, is the son .. of Ashabel's oldest son, Rufus Rice. Daniel V. Rice is my ancestor. My guess is that there were two .. Daniel Rice's .. born around the same time in Digby,... and thus the confusion.

Yes, I am familiar with the names you mentioned. Just one correction -- Isaac Thurber, who went to Campobello, was a son of Samuel Thurber and Mary "Polly" Lewis. Samuel Thurber and Mark Thurber were brothers, the sons of Borden Thurber and Sarah Sabin. Regarding John Billington : Our Sabin line does lead back to him, and he was on the Mayflower, along with his son, Francis -- from what I have read, they caused some trouble on the ship, during that voyage. John Billington has the dubious distinction of being the first man " legally hanged" for "wilful murder", in the American colonies. Closest I can find to a "famous" ancestor of mine ! (grin). I'll send you what info I have on your line shortly.... Best Regards, John

I just wanted to say hello because I believe that Sarah Sabin is also my ggggg grandmother through my great grandmother Elizabeth Thurber Corey. According to the information I've seen, Sarah & Borden had a son, Mark. His son, Isaac came to Campobello Island in 1844. He had a son, Sylvanus who had Elizabeth. In your searches, have you ever come across any of these names? Also, I've seen genealogies that trace Sarah Sabin's line back to John Billington who came over on the Mayflower. What have you found on this? I'd love to hear what you know about Sarah's line because I've only recently begun to trace the Thurbers. Thanks! Debbie Corey Jones

The park, if I remember correctly, was named after him. He was married twice, his second wife being Deidamia Sabin (or Sabean, as it now is often spelled).Dedamia was a sister to my g-g-g-g-grandmother, Sarah, who married Borden Thurber. They were the daughters of Jeremiah Sabin and Susanna LaVallee. Deidamia is said to be the first English child born at Sissiboo (Weymouth) in 1765. Jeremiah Sabin was an early settler to Argyle, Yarmouth County, in 1762 -- By 1765, he had moved to the Weymouth area.Hope this helps some... John

Well, I'm "back in the business" now, of researching, updating, uploading and sharing my Handspiker/Hanselpacker database. I'm currently working on a "split" version of my genealogy database, to include any and ALL Handspikers/Hanselpackers from around the world. What I'd like from those of you reading this message, is any and all references to those bearing these names, whether from years gone by, or, "new arrivals." I've used much of the information Charlotte Vardy gave to me, a few years back, so I have a good starting point. What I need to do is expand, broaden, grow this wonderful "tree." Can you help out, by offering some water, sun, or bountiful soil, so that it will grow tall and wide? ANY help is appreciated. Please e-mail me with any Handspiker connections you may have. New, old, or, somewhere in between. I'm also MORE than willing to share the information I already have, though most of that is already online, not ALL of it is. Glad to be back doing what I love. I am often asked to do look ups for obituaries and I would try to get as many on a page as possible and then post them to the message board in hopes of helping someone. I have indexed the Digby Couriers for vital Stats from 1877-1895 and 1920 -1929 which are avaiable in book form . 1896-1907 is well on the way. and would be glad to do any look ups youu require.I do have Brooks in my Delaney line though .
