Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Wasal and Pauline (Yakimchuk) Melnyk of Victoria Mines. He was a devoted member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian parish, Whitney Pier and St. Alphonsus parish, Victoria Mines. He worked for 50 years with Sydney Steel. He was a devoted family man and a pillar to his community in many ways. He will be sadly missed for his kind and gentle nature by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Augusta (Jackie) MacDonald, Baddeck; son, Michael (Cheryl) Melnyk, Antigonish; grandson, Scott (Cheryl) MacDonald, Middle River; and his pride and joy, great-grandchildren, Zoe Catherine MacDonald and Logan Alexander MacDonald. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Veronica, brother, Sander, sister, Katie, stepfather, Michael Hasiuk and daughter-in-law, Claire. Visitation for the late Mr. Melnyk will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with the Panachyda Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church with Fr. John passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at New Waterford Heights. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Morrison) MacKinnon. John was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. He was employed with Devco in the engineering department retiring in 1980 after many years of service. Father died peacefully and quietly as he lived. John is survived by his wife, Helen (Fielding) MacKinnon; daughters, Angela Moorer, Birmingham, Alabama, Ellen (David) Thomey, Sydney; cherished grandchildren, Mitchell, John and Wyatt Moorer, Catherine and Angela Thomey. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by sisters, Agnes, Sadie, Mary, brothers, Ronald and Gregory, John and Jimmie. Visitation for John MacKinnon will be held Friday 7-9 p.m. in V.J. Brennick Born in: Number Four, Florence, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 12/01/2011 Anne Veronica Brennick, 82, a 60-year resident of Bras d'Or, Cape Breton, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, in the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Number Four, Florence, she was the daughter of Jenny (Carey) Vigneault and stepdaughter of Bill Vigneault. While Anne attended school in Florence and spent her early days playing with all her cousins and younger siblings in the Florence area, she migrated to the village of Bras d'Or in search of her first job, a clerk at the Bras d'Or Consumers' Cooperators. During her working days at the Consumers' Cooperators, Anne started courting a young man from Bras d'Or, John Brennick. Her days as a resident in Florence were coming to an end; on Nov. 3, 1948, Anne Carey became Anne Brennick, wife of John and resident of Bras d'Or. She worked at various jobs over the next 25 years, MacNeils' Motel and Bras d'Or Texaco restaurant. In 1986 Anne and John assumed ownership of the Arm of Gold Campground where she worked tirelessly to serve the tourists who visited the Bras d'Or area. At the young age of 72, Anne handed over the Arm of Gold Campground and Trailer Park reins to her son and his wife. During her 60 years as a member of the Bras d'Or community, Anne taught adult night cooking classes, was an advocate for the Down's syndrome, serving as a member of the Canadian Association of the Down Syndrome Society, both at the national and local level, served St. Joseph parish as a hospitality minister, Eucharistic minister and RCIA sponsor, and was an Associate of the Sisters of St. Martha. Anne is survived by her five daughters, Jean, Bras d'Or, Judy (Bohdam) Wasilewski, Alberta, Joan (Kerry Muir), Florida, Michelle (Pierre Landry), Alberta, and Mary Frances, Bras d'Or; and one son, John (Flora), Bras d'Or. Anne also has eight grandchildren, Pierre and Jennifer Landry, Heather Eaton, Scott Muir, Alexandra and Nicholas Wasilewski and Juliana and Matthew Brennick; and four great-grandchildren, Aaralyn and Felicity Eaton, Nolan Landry and Rylee Dolgin. Anne also has four siblings, Sr. Yvonne Vigneault, Antigonish, Lorraine Fraser, Margaree, Adelaide McNeil, Alberta, and George Vigneault, Alberta. Anne was predeceased by her husband, John in 2000. Anthony MacDonald Born on: 26/12/1939 Passed away in: Malignant Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 04/01/2011 It is with sorrowing hearts that we announce the death of Fr. Angus Anthony Joseph MacDonald of Malignant Cove, Antigonish Co., N.S. Fr. Anthony 'Tony' died suddenly on Jan. 4, 2011 at his "estate" at the Cove while making preparations for his annual trip to Florida. Fr. Anthony was born Dec. 26, 1939, son of the late Dougald and Jean (MacDonald) MacDonald. He attended St. Andrew Rural High and graduated from St. FX University in 1960 with a B.A. degree. (He thoroughly enjoyed being with his classmates at the 50th anniversary of his graduation in October.) He trained for the priesthood at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax and was ordained on May 23, 1964 in St. Ninian's Cathedral by Most Rev.William Power. That same year he was appointed assistant at the following parishes: St. Mary's, East Bay; St. Mary's, Mabou; and St. Peter's, Ingonish. From 1965-1969 he was on loan to the Archdiocese of Quebec where he taught at St. Lawrence College, Quebec City. Fr. Anthony also served at Sacred Heart, Sydney; St. Joseph's, Bras d'Or and St. John's, New Glasgow. He was parish priest at St. Joseph's, Port Felix and mission; Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River; St. Michael's, New Waterford; St. Pius X, Sydney Mines; St. Peter's, Port Hood; St. Michael's, Baddeck and Queen of the World, Wagmatcook. During his priesthood, Fr. Anthony studied at the University of Ottawa receiving a Master of Education. He served as an advocate on the Antigonish/Halifax Marriage Tribunal, was on the personnel board for the Diocease, Ministry to Priests program and the Cursillo Movement. He retired in 2005, but continued to serve wherever and whenever he was called. He loved his fellow man and they loved him, with his sense of humour and optimism. Fr. Anthony will be deeply mourned and sadly missed by his brother, Rickey; sister-in-law, Peggy and their children, Susan, Mark (Suzanne), Jane (Gerry), Luke (Andrea), Sara (Scott), Laura (Dan) and their families, as well as his sister, Margie and her daughters, Janice (Ben), Leanne (Darryl), Nancy (Mark) and their families; 17 grandnieces and grandnephews in all. Fr. Anthony enjoyed many fun times with all his young relatives at dinners, barbeques, fishing trips and the beach, especially in the summer at the cottage. He was a gentle and caring priest who listened well and comforted many. Visitation was held 2:30-4:30 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11 and 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan.12 at MacIsaac Funeral Home, Pleasant Street, Antigonish. She will be sadly missed by her four grandchildren, Douglas (Cynthia), Sydney, Darren (Colleen), Regina, Sask., Sheldon (Beth), Fort McMurray and Tanya, Sydney; four great-grandchildren, Sarah and Hannah Duffy and Leah and Jaret MacDougall. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mae Campbell and Bernice Wambolt. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Christ the King, where she participated in the choir. She was an active member of the Rock Elm Senior Complex, where she resided prior to her illness. In her early years, Dorothy was employed at Oak Hall Ltd. and will be remembered for her sense of style and fashion. Throughout the years, she truly enjoyed shopping as her way to keep up with the latest trends. Dorothy loved to bake, spend time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With a great sense of humour, she always enjoyed a good joke. He embraced his passion for life and natural wit until his final days. Elmer 'Porky' was an avid sportsman beginning with his hockey career which included his induction into the Cape Breton Sports hall of fame for his role as a defenseman with the famous Glace Bay 'Cinderella' Miners of the 1955-56 season. Since 1961 he was well known in the harness racing circles owning many race horses up to present day. Porky was also very well known for his lifelong career in the auto sales business. He will be long remembered for his caring generosity and support of others. Porky was predeceased by his parents, William and Caroline (MacLeod) McMullin and his brother, Francis as well as his sisters, Mary, Betty and Joey. Porky is survived and will be missed by his daughter, Sonya Mac Isaac (Jim Greek) and her brother, Glenn McMullin (Samantha); as well as grandchildren, Marcus Mac Isaac and Rebecca McMullin. He is also survived by sister, Peggy Petrie and brothers, Tom (Carmen) McMullin and Joe (Raylene) McMullin; as well as many nieces and nephews and hundreds of dear friends.
