Danny was the son of the late Joseph and Minnie (Tighe) Burke of Victoria Mines. Danny was a miner, a handyman, a singer and guitar player with the Cape Breton Aces, they had a weekly radio show and played for dances and weddings across Cape Breton. Danny is survived by his brother, Patrick 'Sonny' Burke of Hamilton, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Gloria Burke, Irma Burke, Christina Burke and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters and their spouses, Adeline (Murray) Timmons, Nancy (Raymond) MacNeil, Roberta 'Sister '(Duncan) MacGillivray and Theresa 'Bea' (Allan) Reid as well as four brothers, Michael, Joseph, Earl and Osbourne 'Buddie' Burke. A special thank you to his niece, Grace MacKesey who has been a close friend to Danny for many years. She was a great comfort to him in his final days. A very special thank you to his nephew, John O. Wilson, for his kindness to Danny and the many hours of taking him where ever he needed to go, getting him to and being by his side for many days at the hospital and to John O's wife, Sandra Wilson for her kindness and understanding during this sad time. To the residents of the seniors building who were so kind and phoned when they thought Danny needed help. His nephew, Francis Reid and cousin, Eldon Burke, as always were there to console and help Danny. The nurses and doctors at New Waterford and Cape Breton Regional hospitals were wonderful. To others, thank you for your visits and kind words. At Danny's request, his body was donated to Dalhousie Medical Research Centre so that doctors may learn, lives may be saved and suffering put to an end. There will be no visitation, a family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dalhousie Medical Research Center, Halifax or a charity of one's own choice. 'Archie' Gromick Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Coxheath, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 15/01/2010 Archie Gromick, 77, of Coxheath, passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary (Fiolex) Gromick. Archie was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Archie is survived by his wife, Lois (Timmons); daughter, Ellen (Bob) Gromick, Coxheath; son, Daryl (Mary Joe), Dominion; sister, Caroline Paruch, Sydney; brothers, John (Gen), Dominion, William (Eleanor), Dartmouth, Joseph (Rita), Glace Bay and a grandson, Joey. He was predeceased by a sister, Rose Turner. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 at Sydney Memorial Chapel with Rev. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. *********************************** Joseph 'Chickie' Metcalfe Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 13/11/1941 Passed away in: Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 14/01/2010 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and best friend. Da passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 69 with his loving family by his side. The son of the late William and Margaret (McNeil) Metcalfe, he was born in Glace Bay, Nov. 13, 1941, and moved to Reserve upon his marriage, where he resided for the last 50 years and was a member of St. Joseph's parish. Sheldon was employed for 35 years with Devco retiring as shift manager. Upon retiring Da was able to enjoy many activities, among his favourites were gardening, walking and talking to his many friends along the way. Our Dad was a loving, caring, hardworking man and wonderful provider. He loved sports, country music, spending time with his precious grandchildren, his cat Baboo and the neighbour's dog Ginger who kept him company on his daily walks. Da will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Charlotte Oliver; their seven children, Darrin (Darlene), Aaron (Rhonda), Charlene (Angus) MacNeil, Jerene (Byron Donohue), Johna, Dorrell (Trena), Felicia (David) Cowan. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, Ashton and Angelia Metcalfe, Ryan and Shara Metcalfe and Christopher Pye, Parker, Nathan and Jarret MacNeil, Erica and Kaitlynn Metcalfe, Justin Metcalfe and Jenessa Peters, Robyn and Luke Metcalfe and Adriana Cowan. Also left to mourn his passing are sisters, Dorothy McPhee and Patsy Mills, sister-in-law, Sister Magdalen Oliver, daughters-in-law, Wanda and Diana and son-in law, Don Peters. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Russell and sister, Marion McLeod. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Daniel Boudreau is Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the parish hall, directly below the church. Margaret was born in Cap Rouge, C.B., to Helene (Chiasson) and Auguste Leblanc, and was the last surviving member of her family. Margaret is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Archie Leahy, who will miss her always; and her three children, Loretta (Philip) Magee, Catalone, Gary (Rose), with whom she resided these last precious months, and Albert (Darlene), both of Louisbourg. She was a wonderful Nannie to and so proud of Charity, Melissa, Shaun, Jessica, Rebecca, Sean, Simon and Alyssa and great Nana to Ryan and Nathan and Mercedes. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Dorothy (late Percy) Tutty, Mary Leahy and Dianna (Clark) MacKinnon as well as a large extended family. Left to mourn Margaret's passing are a large amount of friends from all over the world, she met while she and Archie owned and operated the Fleur du Lis Motel in Louisbourg. Retiring to the Mira, mom enjoyed being on the river with Archie, having sing-songs and playing cards with her late sister Yvonne. More recently mom enjoyed her days with the angels that came into all of our lifes at just the right time. We thank them all. Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by sister, Yvonne Lefort and seven brothers, Albert, Patty John, Severen, David, Edmund, William and Joseph. She was also predeceased by daughter-in-law, Patricia Leahy. Margaret will rest at Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg, on Monday, Jan. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in Stella Maris Church on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dearly beloved husband of Margaret (MacDonald) and dear father of Robert (Margaret Thorp), Kathy (John Nolan), Ian, Gordon, Nancy (Matt Holland), Peter (Katy MacLennan) and Hugh (Shannon Sullivan). Wonderful grandfather to Rob and Margaret's Katherine, Angus and Frances; Kathy and John's Rosemary and Harry; Nancy and Matt's Alex, Madeline and Abby; Peter and Katy's Maggie and Ross; and Hugh and Shannon's Sydney. Will also be missed by many friends, nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on July 2, 1925, Robert graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1946 and Dalhousie Law School in 1948. He practiced law with his father until 1958 and served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1958 to 1962, at which time he was appointed Chairman of the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission. He served on the commission and practiced law in Ottawa until his retirement in 1981. He loved his retirement years, he loved Margaret and the family, the cottage, long walks, golf, history, politics and telling stories. Special thanks to Dr. Louise Coulombe and her team. The younger son of the late Aulay and Jean (Carmichael), he lived most of his life in Reserve Mines. Highly respected by his peers, he was employed at Lynk Electric Ltd. as an electrical supervisor for 37 years and served on the Board of Directors for many terms. Harry was an active member of IBEW, Local 1852. His favourite place was his Grampie Carmichael's farm in Georges River where he spent many summers. His best times were spent with his family exploring the island. He took great comfort from his animal friends, especially his little stray 'Baby'. If a fly or bug mistakenly visited our home, he would carefully relocate them to their natural environment. When it became difficult for him to do the things he enjoyed, he took great pleasure in reading. His Kindle was his favourite gift. Survived by his wife, Anita, the woman he loved for 39 years; his beloved daughter, Sarah (Jon) Meades, Falmouth, N.S.; his outstanding grandchildren, Justin and Grace, Falmouth, N.S.; sisters, Arlene (Lorne) Dickie, Upper Stewiake, N.S., and Emily MacDonald, Victoria, B.C.; in-laws, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by his beloved son, Ian in 2005, and his brother and best friend, Warren and niece, Susan Rozee. In honoring Harry's wishes, cremation has taken place.
