Born Aug. 2, 1919, in Larry's River, Guysborough Co., he was a son of Peter Hubert and Mary (Pellerine) Avery. Callis was a decorated Merchant Marine, serving in the Second World War and Korean War. He spent many years as a seafarer and then as a painter and carpenter. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Fraser) Avery; brothers, John, Robert, Joseph, Leonard and Daniel, and sisters, Anita (Askew), Sabina and Margaret. He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Helen Fennessey, Loretta Richard, and Anna Richard; by his children, Michael (Cathy), Daniel (Angela), Susan (Brian) MacDougall, Donald (Judy), Anita (Ken) Dwyer, Leonard (Jane), Margaret Rose (Don) Stewart, Mary Ida (Garth) Hanna, Loretta (Brian) MacDonald. He is survived by his 27 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Vina passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, Vina was the daughter of the late Thomas and Susan (Budge) Burte. She was a member of St. Leo's parish where she was very active in many church groups. She was an instructor with the Christopher Course and served as a board member for many years. Mom was known for her delicious baking, especially her chocolate chip cookies. She loved to shop at the mall on Saturdays. Vina was an inspiration to many by the way she lived her life. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Terry; daughters, Terri Lynn (Jerry) MacNeil, Lydia (Sheldon) Billard of Glace Bay; sons, Charles (Henrietta), Toronto, and Christopher (Kathy), Dominion, and her nine grandchildren. Also left to mourn are sisters, Fannie Bates, Calgary, Bette Bates, Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents Vina was predeceased by brothers, Jim, Audie and Doad. Born in Ingonish, and raised in Sydney, he was the son of the late George Murphy and Mrs. Bessie (Stockley) Murphy. Purcell was employed as a cleaner with ABC. He had a passion for life and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Purcell was an avid fisherman. Besides his mother, Bessie he is survived by his wife, Crystal; children, Christopher (Kaitlyn), Charles (Jessica), Matthew and Leah (Leon); two precious granddaughters, Kylie and Neveah; his grandsons, who he treated like his own, Austin and Anthony. Purcell is also survived by his sister, Marie, brother, Murray, as well as many nieces, nephews and many great family and friends. Eunice passed away peacefully at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011. Born in New Waterford, Eunice was the daughter of the late Colin and Margaret Graham of New Waterford. She was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, a lifetime member of the St. Anne's Society, and a member of the CWL. Eunice devoted many hours to volunteering with church fairs. She also devoted her life to the care of others, both family and friends. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed line dancing and her exercise class with her lifelong friends. Eunice is survived by her three children, Graham (Mary), Kenny, Mary Lou (Greg), all of Sydney; grandchildren, Tyler, Linda Ann, Matthew, Alexander, Johnathan, Amanda and Michelle; one great-grandchild, Matthieu. She is also survived by one brother, Frank Graham, New Waterford; sisters, Pearl Micholsky, New Waterford, Ronnie Brinkley, Madison, Mississippi, Rita (Emo) Pacenti, Raleigh, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews. Eunice was predeceased by her husband, Alex in 1996 after 54 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary Catherine Mercier, brothers, John, Martin and Pius. (Campbell) Parsons Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 27/09/1949 Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 22/01/2011 It is with deep sadness we the family announce the passing of our dear mother, wife, daughter, grandmother, and friend, Lexie Parsons, following a brave battle with cancer. She was 61. Lexie passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family members. She was born Sept. 27, 1949 and was the daughter of Mary (McNeil) of Reserve Mines and the late John Campbell. For many years Lexie was an active member of the Cape Breastoners, a special family of cancer survivors who were committed to dragon boat racing and raising awareness of breast cancer. For several months of the year you would find her at her cottage or on her boat, enjoying her family and many Mira neighbours and friends. An avid reader, you rarely found her without a book, ready to share or recommend a great read. Left to mourn is her devoted husband of 44 years, Joe Parsons, and their children, Lisa (Calvin) Osborne, Glace Bay, Audrey (Blair) Maclellan, Sydney, and Joey (Jenn) Parsons, Glace Bay. She leaves behind the light of her life, her six cherished grandchildren, Cynthia, Brandon, Anthony, Katie, Regan and Caleb. Lexie cherished every moment with them, and provided countless memories, for them to carry with them throughout their lives. Also left to mourn are her brothers, Ronnie (Tood) and Willie (Karen), both of Reserve, Brian (Jean), Dominion, sister-in-law, Myrtle Campbell, Glace Bay, and mother-in-law, Audrey Moskalow, Brampton, Ont., along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, John, sister, Janie and a brother, Bernie. Born in Coomb's Cove, N.L., he was the son of the late Manuel and Blanche (Bartlett) Vallis. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's parish. In his younger years, Ben taught school, fished and later was employed with Parks Canada as a stone mason for 25 years, until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and tinkering around his work shop. Ben is survived by his four children, Donna (James) Ley, Port Hardy, B.C, Ben (Mette)Vallis, Keene, Ont., Roy (Gina) Vallis, Oakview, U.S.A., Edwin 'Eddie' (Sheila) Vallis, Catalone. He is also survived by his sister, Tryphena 'Triffie' Smith, Cole Harbour, brother, Edwin (Jane) Vallis; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
