She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Elaine will be forever remembered for her vivacious laugh and love of life. She has spent her years since retirement travelling with and to visit her children and grandchildren. She was in the midst of planning her trip for 2011 when she was called home. Surviving are her loving children, two daughters, Terri Lynn and Janet, both at home; two sons, Stephen (Martha), Florida, and Brian (Eleanor), Toronto; her four grandchildren, Jessica, Nathan, James and Kyle; one brother, Terry (Jerry), Glace Bay. Born in Glace Bay, Nelson was the son of the late Harold and Pat (Grant) Buchanan. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church, Donkin. Nelson was employed by the Sydney Steel Corporation, retiring after 29 years of service. He was an honorary member of the Donkin Volunteer Fire Department. Nelson thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, golfing, hunting and fishing. Mostly he enjoyed watching and attending hockey games with his wife, Donna. He was an avid Screaming Eagles fan. Nelson is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna (Currie); his five children, Lynn (Charles), Donkin, Deborah, Fredricton, N.B., Donnie (Terrie), New Glasgow, N.S., Donna Marie, Antigonish, N.S., and Wayne, Donkin; his grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Nolan, Steffan, Alexandra, Riley and Travis. He is also survived by his brother, Kevin (Arlene) and their children, Kevin (Lee Ann and Emily), Craig (Carter) and Angie. Nelson's life was made richer by the return of his brother, Kevin to Donkin after years of military service. He enjoyed his time spent with Kevin and Arlene at Dearn's Corner. Dorothy was born in 1915 in Harbour Mille, Fortune Bay, N.L. Dorothy was the daughter of the late William H. and Mary Jane Barnes and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James (Jim) O'Brien in 1995. Throughout her 95 years, Dorothy was a kind, loving and devoted mother and grandmother. This was clearly evidenced by her pride in the achievements of her six children, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorrily missed by all of them. Dorothy was well known for her excellent meals and hospitality, especially to those who were less fortunate. She also spent many hours visiting friends and shut-ins. Well into her 80s, Dorothy continued to enjoy her gardening and knitting. She liked to travel and did so at every opportunity. Dorothy cherished her faith and was a devote member of St. Anthony Daniel parish for 52 years. Her Christian values were exhibited in her daily life and in the interactions with those around her. Remaining mentally alert and considerate to the very end, she was able to tell her family to "be good" and that "she loved them". Nana's generosity was only exceeded by her grace. Dorothy is survived by four daughters, Catherine, Florence (Gerald) Penny, Jean (late Joseph) MacPhee, Patricia (Frank) Dairou; and two sons, Francis (Corry) O'Brien and Ronnie O'Brien, all of Sydney. Nana's passing is also mourned by her grandchildren, Lorne, Kevin, Jeannie, Christopher, Michael, Tracey, Janice, Lesley, Crystal, Theresa, James and Kyle. Nanny O'Brien will be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren, Amanda, Michael, Patrick, Christina, Katrena, Cameron, Jacob, Liam, Sarah Jean and Kayleigh, and her great-great-grandchildren, Grace, Sophie and Alexis. Besides her parents and husband, Jim, Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband, Stephen Dollimount, five sisters, Stella, Florence, Esther, Blanche and Elizabeth and four brothers, Allan, George, Jim and Rueben. The family is deeply indebted to her family physician, Dr. Estelle Cameron and nurse Shelley Martin for their care and compassion over many years which allowed Dorothy to remain at home until the time of her passing. Dorothy received loving care from her many wonderful home care providers of Cape Breton County Homemakers. The family also extends their gratitude to Dr. Ann Frances D'Intino, Beth Latham RN, and Brenda Yates RN of the Cape Breton District Palliative Care. He was 94-years-young and lived a full life. He was loved by all who met him, even though most people thought of him as a little grumpy, he had a heart of gold, and would do anything for you. Dad was born in Margaree Valley. He was the son of the late Donald Stewart and Dorothy Carmichael. Dad served with the RCCS Signal Corps, during the Second World War. He was very proud to be one of the liberators of Holland, and was fortunate enough to be selected by the Cape Breton Post as the veteran to attend the 50th V-Day celebrations in Holland. He retired in 1981 from Maritime Tel&Tel. He was a Level II supervisor. He was a lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers of America; Masonic Lodge, he was a Master Mason with the Tyrian Youth Lodge No 45 and received his 65 year pin; he was a member of the Isle Royale Chapter Rose Croix 18º Valley of Sydney; Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection 14º Valley of Sydney; Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite; a member of Cape Breton Shriner Club and a member of John Bernard Croak, Branch 3. He leaves behind to mourn his sisters, Christine Munro, and Frances Ross; his children, Robert Stewart, Virginia Mac Lean, at home, Marg (Don) Vaters, Charles (Barb) Stewart, Kate (Adrian) Bona, all from Glace Bay, Gary (Jean) Stewart of Barrie, Ont. 'Herbie' was born June 17, 1930, to the late Herbert and Ella (White) MacGillivary and was a lifelong resident of South Bar. Herbie was employed for 39 years with Sydney Steel Company, retiring from the electrical department in 1987. Having a very strong work ethic and being a "jack of all trades", he was always ready to lend a helping hand to his many friends and family, and to his church and community. After retirement he and Isabel loved to travel including many trips to Boston and Florida and he also enjoyed golfing with his friends at Seaview and Ingonish. He loved to dance and attended many Ceilidhs and Scottish festivals both near and far. Many an evening was spent around the table with family and friends enjoying a good game of cards and a cup of tea.
