Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of late James and Mary (Goguen) Butler. Bernice was a member of the former Mount Carmel Parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard and was a long time employee of the Medical Hall Drug Store in New Waterford. Bernice took great pride and joy in her flower gardening and enjoyed her days working in her yard. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, with a life-long faith in God. She is survived by her son John Cathcart (Darlene) Bedford N.S. and grandsons Bryant and Michael. She is also survived by sisters Lucy (James) Klinger, New Waterford, Marie Carrigan, Toronto, Adele Hinchey, Sydney, and brother Roy Butler (Sheila) Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband of 27 years John, and brothers Louis, Joe, James and Gordon. She will be sadly missed by all, including her home care workers Dolly Bailey and Judy Challner who took such wonderful care of Bernice in recent years. Visitation for Bernice will be held Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Carmel Center. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Canadian Celiac Association or a charity of ones choice. Bingie was the last surviving member and the youngest child of Stanley and Belle Murrant of Mechanic Street in Glace Bay. She was predeceased by her parents along with brothers, John, Tom and Mick; sisters, Theresa and Mary. She is survived by nieces, Marina, Angela, Anna and Barbara; nephews, Kevin, Bob, Marty and Jerry. She is survived by her husband, Ben and two very special chosen sons, Derek and Daryl. Online condolences may be sent to www.pierfuneralhome.com. *********************************** Lucille (Bagnell) Gorham Born in: Gabarus, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Tavistock, Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 06/01/2011 Lucille Mae (Bagnell) Gorham, 82, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at People Care in Tavistock, Ont., where she had resided for nearly five years. Born in Gabarus, Cape Breton, Lucille was predeceased by her husband, Donald Arthur Gorham, and lived in Welland, Ont., for most of her adult life. She received her nursing training from Sydney City Hospital in Nova Scotia. She was a longtime nurse at the Welland General Hospital and a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Cathi Gorham-Mol (Woodstock) and Beth Gorham (Ottawa); her son-in-law, Rob Mol, her adored grandchildren, Leah, Lucas and Jacoba Mol and Maia Gorham; sisters-in-law, Ruth Gorham and Elva Bagnell; niece, Judy (Hardy) Creighton; her much-loved cousins and all of her family and friends. Lucille excelled at nursing and was a natural caretaker of all living things. She met Donnie in Welland, where she moved to pursue her career. They were married for 43 years before he died in 1998 from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She dearly loved her birthplace of Gabarus and she passed on that love to her family. She treasured her steadfast family and friends, who were such a wonderful support and comfort to her in later years. She was predeceased by her brother, Everett Bagnell and sisters, Agnes (Bagnell) Hardy and Margaret Bagnell. She was the daughter of the late James and Amy (MacGillivray) Bagnell. Lucille's family offers heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff members of People Care, who took such good care of her and treated her with familial respect and dignity. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada or any local Alzheimer's chapter. A burial service will be conducted at a later date at Fonthill Cemetery near Welland. ************************************ Tony O'Neill Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/01/2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, Tony, on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (MacDonald) O'Neill. A highlight of Tony's early years was travelling across Canada and teaching youth in Northern Alberta. In his later years, Tony found fulfillment as an active and valued member of Terrace Manor. His involvement in this community, where he resided for 26 years, brought Tony much happiness. Tony is survived by his siblings, Anna (Alfie) Kubik, Glace Bay, Joan (Ray) McNeil, Toronto, Ont. and Vince (Dorothy) O'Neill, Brantford, Ont. Also surviving Tony are his many nieces and nephews who will remember him for his kind and gentle smile. Tony was predeceased by sister, Teresa and brothers, Bill, Jack, Cecil, Martin and Michael. There will be no visitation. A mass celebrating Tony's life will be held at Saint Anne's Church on Monday, Jan.10, 2011 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Prior to the mass, family will receive friends starting at 9:30 a.m. in the foyer of the church. A reception will follow the service. Donations in Tony's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. ************************************ Mary 'Kay' MacIsaac Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/01/2011 Mary Catherine MacIsaac, 91, Columbia St., Sydney, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Jessie (MacNeil) Johnston. Kay was a member of St. Theresa's parish and the CWL and enjoyed watching Mass for Shut Ins. Kay was a kind, caring, loving woman and mother to all. She had a great sense of humor and incredible wit. Mary left a special mark on the lives of anyone she met and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She will always be in their hearts. Surviving are her daughter, Sharon MacDonald, Sydney; son, Larry MacIsaac; grandchildren, Gail Long, Gerry Locke and Michelle Leach; great-grandchildren, Faustina Locke, Taylor Long and Keagan Long. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Donald; sister, Theresa Johnston; and brother, Bernie Johnston. As per her wishes, there will be no visitation. Born in Port Morien, Jan. 25, 1947, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary (Andrews) Matheson of Port Morien. Sandy was a member of the pipe fitters and millwright unions and worked on various construction sites and retired due to ill health from Atomic Energy of Canada. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Port Morien. Sandy was very devoted to his family and cherished every moment he spent with his children and precious grandchildren. He will be missed by his old pal, Max. Sandy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra (Butts); by his son, Jason (Carrie), Grand Cache, Alta.; daughters, Terie (Donnie) Buchanan, New Glasgow, N.S., Deanna (Chris), Hampton, N.B. and by grandchildren, Alexandra, Riley, Corbin, Kaiden and Zander; brothers, Robert (Linda), Clarence (Rose); sister, Georgina (Mike) Byrne, all of Port Morien. Also left to mourn is his mother-in-law, Phyllis Butts and her family and many cousins, nieces, nephews and several close friends. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pattenfuneral.com. ************************************** Sister Anne MacLellan Born in: Ben Eoin, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/01/2011 Sister Anne MacLellan, 85, a Sister of Saint Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 in the 57th year of her religious life. Born in Ben Eoin, C.B., Nova Scotia, Sister Anne was one of five children of the late Joseph and Margaret (MacIsaac) MacLellan. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1952, pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1954 and her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1957. Prior to entering the congregation, Sister Anne taught school for two years, following which she was employed in general office work for several years at McCurdy & Co. and at the Cape Breton County Clerk's office, both in Sydney. After her profession of vows, Sister Anne spent most of her life ministering in the field of social work and in spiritual and religious care in various hospitals owned by the congregation. Also, for several years she served in leadership roles within the congregation. A member of the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, Sister Anne graduated in 1969 with her B.A. degree from St. Francis Xavier University. In 1971 she earned her Masters in Social Work Degree from Carlton University, Ottawa. She, also, received a Diploma in Religious Education from University College of Cape Breton in 1981. In Nova Scotia she ministered in spiritual and religious care at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay and St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish as well as St. Michael's General Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta. While in social service ministry, she served with the following social work agencies, Glace Bay Family Welfare, Catholic Family Services of New Waterford, Family Services of Port Hawksbury, Catholic Charities and Family Services, both in Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Sadie MacKinnon, Mary Donovan and brothers, Martin and John. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Sunday, Jan. 9, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Jan. 10, 2 p.m. in the Bethany chapel. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sadie (Lamey) Mancini. Ron was employed for many years by Irving Oil, where he made some great friends He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors, where he spent countless hours working in his garden. Ron had a passion for music, especially his fiddle tunes. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Alice (Bushor); his pride and joy, his two girls, Courtney (Freddie Ford) and Ashley (Brent Aucion); three sisters, Marlene (Daniel Charmichael), Natick, Mass., Bernice King, Sydney Mines, and Lorna (Gerald Connors), Sydney River, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ron was predeceased by his brother Joseph; niece, Michelle and a nephew, Kevin. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A funeral mass to celebrate Ron's life will be held on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating.
